Walk into any protein conversation and it is easy to feel like the advice was written for a 90 kilogram man. A lot of it was. That leaves women with two opposite worries: that they need something completely different, or that they should just eat less because they are smaller. Both are off. The per-kilo formula works for women. What changes is the fine print around body size, the menstrual cycle, and menopause.

Start with the reassuring part. The best evidence on protein for building and keeping muscle uses grams per kilogram of body weight, and that approach works for women just as it does for men. A large 2018 review found the muscle-building benefit of protein plateaus around 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. There is no separate, secret formula for women.
Because the target scales with your weight, a lighter person ends up with a smaller total number of grams. A woman weighing 60 kilograms aiming for 1.6 grams per kilogram lands at about 96 grams a day. A man weighing 85 kilograms lands near 136 grams. Same rule, different totals. The gap in grams is body size, not biology telling women to eat a different way.

What the research on women specifically shows
Because so much early protein research used mostly male participants, it is fair to ask whether the same numbers hold when you study women directly. Reviews that focus on female athletes give a clear answer: the targets land in a very similar place.
A 2020 systematic review of pre-menopausal female athletes found protein needs clustered around 1.4 to 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight per day across endurance, resistance, and mixed training. That sits right inside the general range and confirms women who train regularly benefit from clearly more than the government minimum of 0.8 grams per kilogram.
If you train, aim for roughly 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, and lean toward the higher end (up to about 2.2) when you are losing fat. This holds up in studies done on women, not just men.
Does the menstrual cycle change things?
The menstrual cycle does shift metabolism a little across the month, and appetite often rises in the second half. Some researchers have suggested protein and overall food needs tick up slightly in the phase after ovulation. In practice, though, the effect is small compared with simply hitting your daily target most days.
The more useful point is honesty about the whole picture. Under-eating overall, not just under-eating protein, can disrupt the menstrual cycle and harm bone and hormonal health, a pattern known as low energy availability. If your periods become irregular or stop while you are training hard and dieting, that is a signal to eat more, not less, and to speak with a doctor.
Missing or irregular periods during hard training and dieting is a sign your body is not getting enough fuel. It is worth taking seriously and worth a conversation with your doctor, not something to push through.
Menopause: when the higher end earns its place
The clearest point where women's protein needs shift is around menopause. As oestrogen falls, muscle loss tends to speed up, and muscle becomes a little less responsive to the building signal from protein and exercise, similar to the anabolic resistance seen with ageing generally.
The response is not a wildly different number, it is aiming for the higher end of the range and making each meal count. Around 1.6 grams per kilogram of body weight, spread as solid doses of 25 to 40 grams across the day, supports muscle well through this stage. Pairing that protein with resistance training is the single most effective combination for protecting strength and bone as hormones change.

The honest bottom line for women
Women do not need a different protein playbook. The per-kilo formula works, the muscle-building target sits around 1.6 grams per kilogram, and the research done specifically on women backs it up. Your total grams will be lower than a heavier person's simply because you multiply by your own body weight.
Where it genuinely shifts is at the edges: leaning higher during fat loss, watching for under-fuelling if your cycle changes, and favouring the top of the range around menopause. If there is one message worth keeping, it is that most women eating for fitness are coming up short on protein, not overdoing it. Aim a little higher than feels natural, and spread it across the day.
None of this depends on eating meat. If you eat plant based, the same per-kilo target holds. Build meals around tofu (about 12 to 17 grams per 100 grams), tempeh (around 20 grams), lentils and beans (roughly 15 to 18 grams a cup), edamame, and soy milk or yoghurt. Plant sources are a touch less protein-dense and lower in leucine, so eating slightly larger portions, about 10 to 20 percent more overall, and mixing sources closes the gap. Soy foods are complete proteins and need no combining.
