Weighing food and logging every gram works, but most people cannot keep it up. Life gets busy, meals get eaten out, and the scale ends up in a drawer. The good news is that you do not need that level of precision to hit a protein target. Your body responds to roughly the right amount eaten consistently, not to a number tracked to the decimal. With a simple hand-based system and a few memorised values, you can estimate your daily protein closely enough to build and keep muscle, without ever reaching for a scale.

The palm method: your portable scale
The oldest trick in practical nutrition is to use your hand, because it travels with you and roughly scales with your body size. For protein, the unit that matters is the palm: a portion of a protein-rich food about the size and thickness of your palm, not counting the fingers. One palm of cooked meat, fish, or firm tofu delivers roughly 20 to 30 grams of protein.
That single fact does most of the work. If your daily target is around 120 grams, you are aiming for something like four to five palms of protein-rich food across the day. Build each main meal around one or two palms, add a protein-rich snack, and you are in range without weighing anything. Bigger hands go with bigger bodies and bigger protein needs, which is part of why the method holds up reasonably well across different people.

It is portable, needs no equipment, and scales with body size. It is not laboratory-precise, but for hitting a daily protein target, being roughly right every day beats being exactly right on the days you can be bothered to weigh.
Is estimating accurate enough?
It is fair to ask whether eyeballing portions is good enough or just wishful thinking. Researchers have tested it. A study comparing hand-based estimation against household measures like cups and spoons found that for many foods, hand methods put people within about 25 percent of the true weight, and outperformed household measures for regularly shaped foods. Hands were less reliable for oddly shaped items like meat cuts, which is worth knowing, but overall the approach is a legitimate estimation tool, not a fudge.
Here is why that level of accuracy is fine. The muscle-building protein target itself is a range, not a razor's edge. The benefit builds toward roughly 1.6 grams per kilogram and plateaus, so whether you eat 118 grams or 128 grams on a given day makes no practical difference. You are aiming at a wide target, and hand estimation lands inside it comfortably. Chasing single-gram precision solves a problem you do not have.
Learn a few numbers, not all of them
You do not need to memorise a database. Most people eat the same dozen or so protein sources on repeat, so learning those few numbers covers almost every meal you actually eat. Spend ten minutes committing your regulars to memory and you will estimate faster than any app.

Notice how quickly these stack up. A yoghurt at breakfast, a tuna lunch, and a chicken or tofu dinner already clear 70 to 80 grams, and a shake or a couple of eggs closes most gaps. If you eat plant based, the same idea applies: tofu, tempeh, and soy foods are complete proteins, beans and lentils add up across the day, and slightly larger portions, roughly 10 to 20 percent more, make up for their lower density.
Pick your five most-eaten protein foods and memorise their protein per usual portion. Those five will cover the large majority of your meals, and everything else you can estimate from the palm rule.
Calibrate once, then trust yourself
The one time a scale earns its keep is at the start, to calibrate your eye. Weigh your usual portions just once or twice so you learn what 150 grams of chicken or a real 30-gram serving of yoghurt actually looks like on your plate. After that, your estimates get steadily better and you can put the scale away.
- Set your daily number. Multiply your weight in kilograms by your target, commonly 1.6 for building muscle. That is the total you are estimating toward each day.
- Weigh a few portions once. For a day or two, weigh your staple proteins so you can see what a palm, a pot, or a tin really weighs. This trains your eye.
- Switch to hand and memory. After that, estimate with the palm rule and your memorised numbers. Count palms and pots across the day rather than grams.
- Round up when unsure. Most people under-estimate rather than over-estimate protein, so when in doubt, assume the smaller portion and add a little. It keeps you from quietly falling short.
Breakfast and snacks are where estimates go wrong, because they hide how little protein they contain. Toast, cereal, and fruit feel like a real meal but add up to almost no protein. Anchoring breakfast with eggs, yoghurt, or a shake is the estimate most people get wrong and the fix that helps most.
