Meetup vs Bumble For Friends: Which Works for Making Friends?

Meetup vs Bumble For Friends compared: an event you turn up to against a match you have to turn into a plan. What each really costs, and which suits you.

Meetup puts you in a room with people who turned up for the same reason you did. Bumble For Friends puts you in a chat with one person and leaves the rest to you. Both are free to start, both are widely used, and they fail in opposite ways. Every fact below is quoted from their own live pages; the Meetup help centre article was read on 21 September 2026 and the London listing observation is dated 4 September 2026.

How Meetup works

Meetup has been a directory of interest groups and events since 2002. You browse what is happening near you, RSVP to something, and turn up. The range is the real advantage: browsing London, the categories included language exchange, technology, dancing, sport, art and culture, games and science, and most listings cost nothing to attend.

Size varies enormously and is worth knowing before you plan an evening around it. On 4 September 2026 the attendee counts on the first screen of London listings ran from 74 to 546, and Meetup itself says group sizes range from large gatherings to small ones. A book club of nine and a hike of two hundred are the same product.

"Free to join" is only part of the picture

This is the part that catches people, so it is worth reading before you rely on the free plan. Meetup sells a member subscription called Meetup+, and its own help centre calls the free tier "the limited free plan". According to its "Meetup+ vs. Free Plan Members" article, read on 21 September 2026, all of the following sit behind Meetup+ and not on the free plan:

  • Full access to the attendee list and group member lists
  • Full access to member profiles
  • Full access to the "Who will be there" feature for upcoming events
  • Unrestricted direct messaging with other members
  • Priority position on event waitlists
  • Exemption from service fees when RSVPing to paid events
  • Earlier event announcements, an ad-free experience, a profile badge and custom app icons

Separately, and Meetup is careful to say these are not the same charge, individual organisers can set member dues for their own group. Meetup says those groups show a "Request to join" button rather than the usual "Join group". And its free trial of Meetup+ begins a recurring subscription automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel first. No Meetup+ price is published on the pages read, so none is quoted here.

None of that makes the free plan useless. Most listings are genuinely free to attend and you can turn up to them without paying Meetup anything. It does mean that on the free plan you cannot see who is coming, which for a lot of people is the question they most wanted answered.

How Bumble For Friends works

Bumble turned its BFF mode into a standalone app for platonic connections only. In Bumble's words: "You swipe through profiles and when two people swipe right on each other, you can start chatting! Either person can send the first message." You can download it free from the App Store or Google Play, with optional paid extras; no figure is quoted here because Bumble's pricing article was not readable when this page was written.

It also has a group planning tool. Any member with two or more matches can start a plan for a group meetup, choosing coffee, a bite to eat, something outdoors, live music or a show, or a games night, or writing their own, then inviting at least two connections into a shared chat. Bumble notes on the same page that the app "may not be currently available in your region".

The two opposite failure modes

Neither of these is bad at what it does. They are bad at different things, and knowing which one will fail you is more useful than knowing which is better.

Meetup fails by being a room. You turn up, the event happens, it is genuinely interesting, and you go home having spoken to nobody in particular. Nothing went wrong. Large events do not require anyone to talk to you, and if you are tired or new or not naturally the person who introduces themselves, an evening can pass without a single conversation that goes anywhere. Going back repeatedly is what fixes this, and repeat attendance is exactly what somebody on a short stay does not have.

Bumble For Friends fails by never leaving the phone. The match is easy and pleasant and the chat is fine, and then somebody has to propose a specific night at a specific place, and often nobody does. The app has given you a person and handed you the entire job of turning that person into an evening.

So: if your problem is that you do not know anybody, Bumble For Friends addresses it directly and costs nothing to try. If your problem is that you cannot make yourself talk to people cold, Meetup will not solve it for you and a smaller event will serve you far better than a large one. Read the attendee count before you RSVP.

Where KF.Social fits

KF.Social is a third shape, and a narrower one: a booked table rather than a room or a chat. London only, on Thursdays at 7pm London time; check the current dates and area before booking. 15 pounds for the seat, published before you pay, covering the matching and not the meal; you pay the restaurant for your own food and drink.

A table is six people, and a seventh booking is not turned away because we open another table of six. Six is the point rather than a limit: at a table of six everybody talks, because there is nowhere else to be. The restaurant lands about six hours before, the table about an hour before, when the group chat opens. Booking closes six hours before. Cancel 72 hours or more ahead and the 15 pounds goes back to your card, and inside 72 hours it does not come back. If the table does not run, everyone is refunded in full whatever the clock says. Booking gates on two things only: being 18 or over, and having paid.

Where both of them beat us. Meetup has vastly more choice, runs everywhere, has done since 2002, and most of its listings cost nothing, which we cannot match on any of the four. Bumble For Friends is free to download and lets you choose the individual person, which we do not. We do one thing in one city on one evening a week for now, and if you want range, or you want to spend nothing, or you are not in London, one of them is the better answer.

Common Questions

Is Meetup free?
Joining Meetup and attending most listed events is free, and that remains the honest headline. It is not the whole picture: Meetup sells a member subscription called Meetup+, and its own help centre describes the free tier as "the limited free plan". The full attendee list, member profiles, the "Who will be there" feature, unrestricted direct messaging and waitlist priority all require Meetup+, and individual organisers can set separate dues for their own group.
Can I see who is going to a Meetup event without paying?
Not in full. Meetup's help centre lists full access to the attendee list, to member profiles and to the "Who will be there" feature as Meetup+ benefits that are not on the free plan, so on the free plan you get a partial answer to the question most people actually want answered before they commit an evening.
Which is better for someone shy?
Neither is ideal, and a large Meetup event is usually the harder of the two, because nothing about a room of two hundred people requires anyone to talk to you. Bumble For Friends is easier at the first step, since the conversation starts in a chat, and harder at the last step, because somebody has to propose an actual night. If the cold approach is the problem, pick the smallest event you can find rather than the most interesting one.
Does Bumble For Friends work for group plans?
Yes. Bumble says any member with two or more matches can create a plan for a group meetup, choosing an activity such as coffee, a bite to eat, something outdoors, live music or a games night, and inviting at least two connections into a shared chat where everyone can see the full history.
Which one is better on a short stay in a city?
Both are weaker than they look, because both reward repetition. Meetup works through going back to the same group until people know you, and Bumble For Friends works through weeks of matching and arranging. If you have two or three weeks, the thing that produces an actual evening fastest is something already booked for a date you can see.
Is there an option where the evening is already arranged?
KF.Social books the table for you in London on Thursdays at 7pm London time, subject to the published schedule, at 15 pounds a seat with food and drink paid at the restaurant. It covers one city and one evening a week for now, so it offers nothing like the range of Meetup and none of the choice of person that Bumble For Friends gives you.
