There is a satisfying feeling when you lock out a rep, elbows and knees snapped straight, the weight held dead still at the top. It feels like the finished, successful version of the rep. But your muscles do not care how the rep looks. They respond to tension, the force they have to produce to hold and move a load. And at a full lockout the load often shifts onto your bones and joints, tension on the working muscle drops toward nothing, and you get a brief rest inside a rep that was supposed to be working. Keeping the muscle loaded through the whole range, what people call constant tension, usually keeps the growth stimulus higher. This is not a reason to never lock out. It is a reason to understand what actually drives growth so you stop leaking it.

What actually grows muscle
Before you can judge lockouts, you need the real driver of growth. Reviews of the science keep landing on the same answer: the main signal for muscle growth is mechanical tension, the force your muscle fibres have to produce when they contract against a load. Enough tension, applied across enough hard reps, tells the muscle to adapt and get bigger.
The pump, the burn, and soreness are side effects, not the cause. What the muscle needs is meaningful force for enough repetitions taken reasonably close to fatigue. That is the lens for everything that follows. Anything in your rep that reduces tension on the target muscle is quietly reducing the stimulus, even if the rep still counts on paper.
Growth follows tension on the muscle, not effort in general. A rep can feel hard on your joints or your grip while the muscle you are trying to build gets a break. Keeping tension on the target is the whole game.
How a lockout can leak tension
Lock out a bicep curl and your forearm ends up nearly vertical, the load stacked straight down through your elbow onto your upper arm and skeleton. In that position the bicep barely has to work to hold the weight, so tension on it collapses. Pause there and you are resting the exact muscle you came to train. The same thing happens at the top of a lateral raise held too high, at the top of a leg extension where the load hangs off the knee, and in the fully locked position of many cable and machine moves.
This is where the idea of constant tension comes in. Instead of driving to a dead lockout and pausing, you stop just short of the point where the joint takes over, keep the muscle loaded, and reverse. The muscle never gets its free rest, so it stays under tension for the whole set. On exercises where the resistance profile lets tension bleed away at the top, this usually keeps the growth stimulus higher across the set.

When you should absolutely lock out
Constant tension is a tool, not a religion. There are lifts where the lockout is the point and cutting it short would be a mistake. On a squat, deadlift, bench press, or overhead press, standing tall or pressing to straight arms is a real position you want to own. It is where you prove the rep, it is where a lot of strength lives, and on the deadlift especially the lockout at the top is a legitimate rest that lets you do the next rep safely. Turning your big barbell lifts into bouncy half reps to chase constant tension trades a large stimulus for a small idea.
Locked, joint-supported positions are also useful when you deliberately want rest inside a set, such as a brief pause at the top of a heavy carry or a lockout hold to build confidence with a load. The point is not that lockouts are bad. It is that on isolation and cable work, an unthinking lockout hands the muscle a rest you did not intend.
Turning constant tension into permanent half reps. Cutting the bottom of the range to keep tension on is the wrong trade. The stretched, lengthened position is one of the most productive parts of the rep. Trim the top if it leaks, never the bottom.
The bigger lever: loading the stretch
Here is the part people miss when they get excited about constant tension. Keeping tension on at the top matters, but where you get the most growth is at the bottom, in the stretched position, when the muscle is long and loaded. Meta-analysis of range-of-motion research finds that training through a full range, and especially loading the muscle at longer lengths, tends to build more muscle than short partials that live in the easy middle.
So the honest hierarchy is this. First, use a full range and load the stretch. Second, keep tension on through the working range and avoid dumping it at a joint-supported lockout. Chasing constant tension while cutting the stretch is like tuning the radio while the engine is off. Get the range right first, then clean up the lockout leak.
- Own the stretched position. Let the muscle reach its long, loaded position under control on every rep. This is where the strongest growth signal lives, so never trade it away.
- Control the eccentric. Lower under control instead of dropping the weight. A dropped negative removes tension and skips the most valuable part of the rep.
- Stop just short of a joint-supported lockout. On cables, machines, and raises, reverse before the load stacks onto the skeleton so the muscle keeps working.
- Keep barbell lockouts. On squats, deadlifts, and presses, finish the lift fully. The lockout there is strength and safety, not a leak.
Putting it into your training
You do not need to overhaul your program. On your isolation and cable work, run your reps with a smooth turnaround that keeps the muscle loaded, a controlled lowering phase, and a full stretch at the bottom, stopping just shy of the point where the joint takes the load. On your big barbell lifts, keep training them the way they are meant to be done, full lockout included.
One caution. Constant tension usually means you will not use quite as much weight, because you are not getting the rest that a lockout gives inside the set. That is fine. The set will feel harder for the same load, which is the point. Judge it by whether the target muscle is doing the work through the whole range, not by the number on the plates.
Load the stretch, control the lowering, keep the muscle working through the range, and only skip the lockout on lifts where it leaks tension. Do that and you keep the growth signal high without turning your training into a pile of half reps.
