Ask most lifters and they will tell you to use a full range of motion on every rep, no cheating, no half reps. That advice is mostly right, and it holds up in the research. But the picture is more interesting than full good, partial bad. What the studies actually show is that the part of the movement you emphasise, especially the stretched part, can matter as much as how far you travel. Understanding that lets you use both tools on purpose instead of arguing about which one wins.

Full reps and partials, defined
A full range of motion rep takes a joint through its whole available travel: at the bottom of a squat your hips drop below your knees, at the bottom of a curl your arm is straight. A partial rep only covers part of that travel. The key point is that not all partials are the same, because they can live in different parts of the movement.
- Lengthened partials happen in the stretched part of the range, where the muscle is at its longest. Think the bottom half of a squat or the bottom half of a curl.
- Shortened partials happen near the top, where the muscle is fully contracted. Think the top few inches of a leg extension or the squeeze at the top of a curl.
- Full range covers the whole path, stretch through squeeze, on every rep.
When people say partials do not work, they are usually picturing shortened partials, the ego-lifting top quarter of a movement. That reputation is fair for those. Lengthened partials are a different animal, and that distinction is the whole story here.
What the research actually shows
A systematic review and meta-analysis by Wolf and colleagues pooled the studies comparing full and partial range of motion training. The headline finding was that full range of motion had a small edge on average, but the difference across outcomes was trivial to small. In plain terms, both approaches build muscle, and neither is a disaster.
The more useful finding was buried in the subgroup analysis. When the partial training happened at long muscle lengths, the stretched end of the range, it held up very well against full range and sometimes came out ahead. Partials at short muscle lengths did not. So the meaningful divide is not full versus partial. It is where in the range the tension lives.
Full range of motion wins slightly on average, but that average hides the real lesson: a rep is only as good as the stretch inside it, and partials that keep the stretch can compete with full reps.
Why the stretched position does so much
When a muscle is in a lengthened, loaded position, its fibres are under a particular kind of mechanical tension that seems to be an especially strong signal for growth. This is why a deep squat challenges the quadriceps more than a quarter squat, and why the bottom of a curl feels harder than the top even with the same weight on the bar.
Full range reps automatically include this stretched portion, which is a big reason they work so well. The catch is that they also spend time in the shortened, top part of the movement, where tension often drops off and the muscle is doing relatively little. Lengthened partials skip that low-value top portion and keep hammering the part that matters.

What full range still wins that partials do not
None of this means you should abandon full reps. Full range of motion buys you things a partial cannot, and for most people most of the time it should stay the default.
- Strength across the whole range. Strength is specific to the range you train. Full reps make you strong from the deepest position to lockout, which partials will not.
- Mobility. Loading a joint through its full travel helps you keep, and sometimes build, usable range of motion. Living in a short partial can quietly cost you flexibility.
- Simplicity and honesty. Full reps are hard to fudge. Partials tempt people to load up and bounce a few inches, which builds ego more than muscle.
- A slightly higher average result. The meta-analysis still tips toward full range overall, so as a blanket default it is the safe pick.
How to use both in practice
The smart move is not to pick a side. It is to make full range your base and add lengthened partials as a targeted tool, usually at the end of a set or for muscles that are hard to load in a stretch.
- Default to full range. Program most of your working sets through a full, controlled range with a load you have to earn. This covers strength, mobility, and the bulk of your growth.
- Add lengthened partials to finish a set. When you reach the point where a full rep is no longer possible, keep going with partial reps in the stretched bottom portion until those fail too. You extend hard, high-value work when the muscle is longest.
- Favour exercises that load the stretch. Overhead triceps extensions, deep squats, stiff-leg deadlifts, and incline curls all put meaningful load on the muscle at long length. These get more out of every full rep.
- Skip shortened partials for size. Top-range half reps have their place for specific strength sticking points, but as a growth strategy they are the weakest option. Do not confuse them with lengthened partials.
Using partials as an excuse to load more weight than you can control. If you are bouncing a heavy bar through a few inches with sloppy form, you are not doing lengthened partials, you are just adding injury risk. Keep the same control you would use on a full rep.
