The cable pull through is the exercise people avoid because of how it looks: you stand facing away from a cable stack, reach between your legs, and hinge. Get past the awkwardness and you have one of the best teaching tools in the gym for the hip hinge, the same pattern that powers the deadlift, the kettlebell swing, and the Romanian deadlift. Because the resistance pulls horizontally from behind you, it loads your glutes and hamstrings hard while asking almost nothing of your lower back. That makes it a rare thing: a posterior chain builder you can train heavy and often without beating up your spine.

Why the pull through earns a place
Most posterior chain exercises, the ones that build your glutes and hamstrings, load your spine to some degree. A deadlift or a Romanian deadlift holds weight in your hands with gravity pulling straight down, so your lower back has to resist that whole load. That is fine and useful, but it also means fatigue and, for some people, a limit on how much they can do before their back gives out first.
The pull through changes the direction of the force. The cable pulls you backward and down, roughly horizontally, from a low pulley behind you. Your glutes have to fight that horizontal pull to bring your hips forward and stand up straight. Your spine is barely loaded in the compressive way a barbell loads it. You get a strong hip hinge stimulus with a fraction of the axial fatigue.
A hinge is bending mostly at the hips, pushing your backside back while your spine stays long and neutral, then standing up by driving your hips forward. It is different from a squat, where the knees do most of the bending. The hinge is the engine of the deadlift, and the pull through is the friendliest way to learn it.
Setting up the pull through
The setup is what makes people self conscious, and it is also what makes the exercise work. Take a moment to get it right and the movement becomes obvious.
- Set the pulley low. Attach a rope handle to the lowest setting on a cable stack. A rope is best because it lets your hands split naturally as it passes between your legs.
- Face away and straddle the cable. Stand facing away from the stack, feet a bit wider than shoulder width. Reach between your legs and grab the rope, one end in each hand.
- Walk out to tension. Take a couple of steps forward until the weight lifts slightly off the stack and there is constant tension. You want the cable taut at the top of every rep.
- Hinge back. Push your hips straight back, letting your torso fold forward, keeping a long flat spine. Let your knees bend slightly but not much. Feel the stretch build in your hamstrings and glutes.
- Drive the hips through. Stand up by squeezing your glutes and pushing your hips forward until you are tall, without leaning back past straight. The cable follows your hands through your legs. That is one rep.
The biggest cue: do not pull with your arms. Keep your elbows fairly straight and let your hands ride along with the cable. All the work comes from your hips hinging back and then snapping forward. If your biceps are tired, you are rowing, not hinging.

The theme running through most faults is confusing a hinge with a squat, or letting the arms take over. If you keep the knees fairly quiet and think push the hips back, then snap the hips forward, the pattern usually clicks within a few reps. That clarity is exactly why coaches use the pull through to teach the deadlift.
How to program it
Because the pull through is light on your spine and heavy on the glutes, you can use it in a few different roles. It rarely needs to be your only posterior chain move, but it slots in beautifully around the bigger lifts.
- As a warm up before deadlifts. A couple of sets of 12 to 15 grooves the hinge pattern and wakes up your glutes before you load a bar.
- As a finisher on leg or pull day. Higher reps, 15 to 20, chasing a strong glute squeeze at the top, once the heavy work is done.
- As a lower back friendly main move. On days your spine is fatigued, the pull through lets you still train the posterior chain hard without axial loading.
- As a hinge teacher. If your deadlift keeps rounding or feeling like a squat, spend a few weeks drilling pull throughs to rebuild the pattern.
Reps in the 10 to 20 range suit it well, because it is a squeeze and feel exercise rather than a grind heavy exercise. Focus on tension and a hard glute contraction at the top rather than piling on plates. The pull through rewards control, not ego.
It is tempting to load the stack heavy and then heave the weight up with your whole body, arms and back included. That defeats the point. If you cannot keep a flat back and a hip driven movement, the weight is too heavy. Drop it and earn the pattern first.
