Your strength is not the same every day. Sleep, stress, food, and yesterday's session all move it around. A program written in fixed percentages of your one rep max cannot see any of that, so on a bad day it grinds you into the ground and on a good day it lets you coast. Reps in reserve fixes this by asking the one question that actually tracks your effort: how many more reps did you have left?

What reps in reserve means
Reps in reserve is simple: when you stop a set, it is the number of extra good reps you could have completed before hitting failure. Stop with two reps in reserve and you mean you could have squeezed out about two more clean reps before the weight stopped moving or your form broke down.
It is the everyday, practical version of a rating of perceived exertion (RPE) scale, a way of scoring how hard an effort feels. Strength coaches use a lifting-specific version where the top of the scale maps directly onto reps left. An RPE of 10 means zero reps in reserve, which is true failure. An RPE of 8 means you had about two good reps left.

Every set, ask yourself: how many more good reps could I have done? That number is your reps in reserve, and it tells you almost everything about how hard the set was.
Why it beats training by percentages
The traditional way to set intensity is a percentage of your one rep max: do this lift at 75 percent, this one at 80 percent. It looks scientific, but it has a blind spot. Your true strength changes day to day, while the number in your program does not.
On a day when you slept badly, are stressed, or are still recovering from a hard session, that 80 percent might feel like a near-maximal grind. On a great day it might feel easy. Percentages are anchored to a max you tested weeks ago and cannot see the person who showed up today. Reps in reserve reads your effort in real time, so the actual difficulty stays where you want it, whatever kind of day you are having.

Reps in reserve is a built-in form of autoregulation. It lets a good day be a good day and stops a bad day from crushing you, all without rewriting your program.
How to use it for growth
For building muscle, the target for most working sets is landing around one to three reps in reserve. That is hard enough to recruit and load the growth-prone muscle fibres, without the heavy fatigue cost of grinding every set to failure. Where in that range you aim depends on the lift.
- Heavy compound lifts: aim for 2 to 3 reps in reserve. Missing a rep on a heavy squat or deadlift is risky and very tiring, so leave a slightly bigger buffer.
- Moderate hypertrophy work: aim for 1 to 2 reps in reserve. This is the reliable, all-purpose growth zone for most exercises.
- Isolation and machine work: you can push to 0 to 1 reps in reserve. Low injury risk makes these the safe place to train very close to failure.
- Late in a hard block, you might deliberately train a little further from failure to manage fatigue, then push closer again after a lighter week.
Reporting the same reps in reserve every set out of habit rather than reading the actual set. The number is only useful if it is honest. If your last reps were fast and smooth, you had more in reserve than you logged.
Getting accurate at judging it
There is one honest limitation to name. Beginners are not very good at estimating reps in reserve, and studies show accuracy improves with experience. New lifters tend to think they are closer to failure than they really are, and they get more accurate as the set gets closer to the end. This is a skill, and it is trainable.
- Occasionally take a safe set to failure. On a machine or isolation lift, go all the way once in a while. It teaches you what zero reps in reserve actually feels like, so you can count backward from it.
- Watch your rep speed. As you truly near failure, the bar slows down even at full effort. Fast, smooth reps are a reliable sign you still have several in reserve.
- Log the number every set. Writing down your estimated reps in reserve forces you to judge each set and, over weeks, sharpens your sense of effort.
- Give yourself a few weeks. Accuracy climbs with practice. Do not abandon the method because your early estimates are shaky. That is expected.
- Pair it with progression. Reps in reserve controls how hard each set is. Growth still needs the reps and load to trend up over time, so keep beating your logbook.
