There is a stubborn belief that if you did not take a set to the point of total failure, you left growth on the table. The evidence tells a gentler story. Getting close to failure matters, because that is what makes your body recruit and load the muscle fibres most able to grow. But going all the way to failure on every set adds fatigue faster than it adds muscle. The best zone is close, not to the edge.

Why getting close to failure matters at all
Muscle grows in response to tension, and not every rep in a set delivers the same tension to the fibres that grow best. Early in a set, your body uses smaller, easily fatigued muscle fibres. As the set gets genuinely hard and those fibres tire, your nervous system is forced to call in the larger, higher-threshold fibres, the ones most able to grow, and load them fully.
This is why an easy set that stops with five or six reps still in the tank does so little. You never reach the point where the big fibres have to take over. "Close to failure" matters because the hard, grindy reps near the end are when those fibres finally do their work. The goal is to reach that zone, not necessarily to keep going once you are in it.
The last few hard reps before failure are the ones that count most. You need to reach them. You do not need to run past them into failure to get the benefit.
What the research says about failure
Several reviews have compared training to failure with stopping short. The pattern is consistent: for muscle growth, going to failure offers little or no advantage over stopping a rep or two short, as long as you are still training hard and doing enough volume.
A 2022 systematic review of proximity to failure found only a trivial edge for training to true failure on hypertrophy, and that small edge came at a real cost. Training to failure produces much more fatigue, takes longer to recover from, and can reduce how much quality work you manage in the rest of your session and week. When failure quietly cuts your total hard volume, it can end up slowing your growth rather than speeding it.

Taking every set to grinding, form-breaking failure and assuming that is optimal. More often it just buys you extra soreness and fatigue while cutting the number of good, hard sets you can actually do.
The practical sweet spot
For most people and most sets, the productive zone is stopping when you have roughly one to three good reps left in you, sometimes called reps in reserve. That is hard enough to recruit and load the growth-prone fibres, but not so hard that it destroys your recovery.
How close you push should track the load and the exercise, because the risk and cost of failure change with both.

If you are unsure, aim to stop most working sets with one to two solid reps still in the tank. It captures nearly all the growth stimulus while keeping you fresh enough to train hard again soon.
How to judge how close you are
Estimating reps in reserve is a skill, and beginners tend to stop too early because a hard set feels closer to failure than it is. A few honest checks help you calibrate.
- Watch your rep speed. As you near failure, the weight slows down noticeably even when you push at full effort. Fast, smooth reps mean you still have plenty left.
- Occasionally test true failure on a safe move. On a machine or isolation lift, take one set all the way. It recalibrates your sense of how a set really feels near the end.
- Do not let form break. A rep that turns ugly, with cheating or lost position, is not a bonus rep. That is usually past the useful zone.
- Be honest, not heroic. Stopping short is a strategy, not an excuse. The set still has to be genuinely hard, or the whole point is lost.
New lifters usually stop well short of failure without realising it. If you are new, it is worth practising taking safe sets closer to the edge so your "hard" sets are actually hard.
Putting it into practice
Here is how to apply all of this across a training week without overthinking it.
- Default to one to two reps in reserve. Make this your standard for most working sets across most exercises. It is the reliable growth zone.
- Keep more in reserve on heavy compounds. On heavy squats, deadlifts, and presses, stop with two to three reps left. The risk and fatigue of failure there are not worth it.
- Save true failure for safe lifts. If you want to chase failure, do it on machines and isolation moves where a missed rep costs nothing.
- Protect your weekly volume. If pushing to failure early leaves you unable to complete your planned hard sets, back off. Total quality volume beats a few heroic sets.
- Progress the numbers over time. Proximity to failure sets the intensity, but growth still needs the reps and load to climb week over week.
