There is a tidy logic to eating less protein on the days you do not train. No workout, no muscle damage, so surely less need to repair? It sounds sensible and it is wrong. Your muscles are not rebuilt while you are grinding out reps. They are rebuilt afterwards, during rest, and that rebuilding process runs for a day or two after the session that triggered it. Rest days are when the actual construction happens, which is precisely why they are not the days to skimp on the building material.

Muscle is built on rest days, not in the gym
Training does not build muscle. It signals for it. When you lift, you create mechanical tension and some muscle damage, which tells the body to adapt. The actual adaptation, laying down new muscle protein, happens over the hours and days that follow, while you rest, eat, and sleep. This is the single fact that settles the rest-day question. If the building happens during recovery, then the days you recover are the days that need the raw material.
How long does that building phase last? A classic study measured muscle protein synthesis, the rate at which the body assembles new muscle, after a single resistance session. It was raised by about 65 percent at 24 hours and still up around 34 percent at 48 hours afterwards. In other words, the day after a hard session, and often the day after that, your muscles are still actively rebuilding. Those are usually your rest days.
Your target tracks your body, not your schedule
Protein recommendations are given in grams per kilogram of body weight for a reason. Your muscles do not know whether today is a lifting day or a Sunday on the sofa. They know how much protein arrived and whether repair is underway. The evidence-based target, around 1.6 grams per kilogram for building muscle and up to about 2.2 for some people, is a daily figure, not a per-workout one.
So the honest instruction is almost anticlimactic: work out your daily number and hit it every day. A rest day is not a reason to eat 40 grams less any more than a work day is a reason to eat 40 grams more. Consistency is what feeds the ongoing repair.

Spread it the same way you always do
Because the rebuilding runs across the whole rest day, there is no benefit to loading all your protein into one meal and coasting. Three or four meals of roughly 25 to 40 grams each keeps a steady supply of amino acids available while your muscles do their repair work.
If anything, rest days can be easier to get right, because you are not juggling workout timing. You do not need to worry about eating protein immediately before or after a session, so you can simply focus on three balanced, protein-anchored meals. There is one small refinement worth knowing: a protein-rich meal or snack in the evening, such as Greek yoghurt or a casein-style shake before bed, feeds the muscle repair that continues overnight. It is a minor bonus, not a requirement, but on a rest day it costs nothing and tops up the same steady supply your muscles are drawing on while they rebuild.

Hitting the number on a lazy day
The practical challenge on rest days is not biology, it is routine. Many people eat their most structured, protein-rich meals around training, and rest days drift into grazing on lower-protein snacks. That is where the shortfall sneaks in. Keeping a few reliable options on hand solves it whether you eat meat or plants.

If you eat plant based, rest days are no different: a lentil or bean stew, a tofu stir-fry, or edamame and a soy yoghurt cover it cleanly. Soy foods are complete proteins, and mixing a couple of plant sources across the day closes any gap. The goal is the same number, however you get there.
Grazing. A day of coffee, toast, fruit, and snacks can land far below your protein target without feeling like you undereated. Anchor at least three meals with a real protein source and the day sorts itself out.
