There is a specific kind of frustration in racking a deadlift not because your legs or back gave out, but because the bar slid out of your hands. The exercises that build a stronger pull
You do not need much equipment or much time. A handful of proven methods build supporting grip quickly, and most of them double as good training for the rest of you.
Do more of your pulls without straps
The simplest fix costs nothing. If you always strap your heavy rows and deadlifts, your grip never gets challenged. Do your warm-up sets and your lighter working sets with a bare grip, and only reach for straps when the load would otherwise end the set early. Your grip trains every time you pull.
Heavy holds and shrugs
Load a barbell to a weight you can hold for 10 to 30 seconds and simply hold it at the top of a deadlift. These holds build supporting grip directly. A few sets at the end of a pulling day is enough. Heavy shrugs, held briefly at the top, do a similar job while building your upper back.
Loaded carries
Pick up a heavy dumbbell or kettlebell in each hand and walk. The farmer's carry is one of the best grip builders there is, and it trains your core, shoulders, and legs at the same time. Aim to walk for 30 to 60 seconds per set, or until your grip is nearly done.
Dead hangs
Just hang from a pull-up bar with straight arms and hold. It builds grip endurance, decompresses the shoulders, and needs nothing but a bar. Work up to a 60-second hang over time, then make it harder by hanging from one arm or adding weight.
You do not need a whole grip day. Two to four sets of heavy holds or carries, twice a week at the end of your pulling sessions, is enough to turn grip from your weak link into a strength for most people.
How to use straps without becoming dependent
Lifting straps loop around the bar and your wrist so your hand cannot open. They are not cheating; they are a tool. The mistake is using them for everything, so your grip never has to work and never gets stronger.
The sensible rule is to strap the sets where grip would rob the target muscle of a proper workout, and train grip bare the rest of the time. On a top deadlift set where your hips have plenty left but your grip is fading, straps let you train your hips fully, and that is exactly what they are for. On your other sets, drop the straps and let your grip catch up.

Grip strength is bigger than the gym
There is a reason grip gets so much attention beyond lifting. Across very large studies, grip strength turns out to be one of the simplest and most reliable markers of overall health. It is not that a strong grip magically protects you; it is that grip strength reflects your total muscle and health status, so it moves with your risk.
In the PURE study, a large international project, each 5 kg drop in grip strength was linked to about a 16% higher risk of dying from any cause over the follow-up period. Grip is now widely discussed as a simple marker of healthy ageing. That is not a reason to panic over a weak handshake, but it is a nice bonus: the training that fixes your deadlift also builds strength that tracks with a longer, more capable life.
