You set up for a heavy deadlift, brace hard, and pull. The bar leaves the floor, but halfway up your fingers start to open and you have to set it back down. Your back and legs had more in them. Your hands did not. This is one of the most common and least talked about ceilings in strength training: the grip fails, so the set ends before the muscles you were trying to train are anywhere near done.

Why the grip gives out first
The muscles that close your hand are small compared with the ones that extend your hips and pull your torso. They also fatigue quickly under a sustained, static hold, which is exactly what a heavy set asks of them. Your hamstrings get to shorten and lengthen through the lift, but your fingers just have to clamp and stay clamped, rep after rep, with no rest.
As the load climbs, the gap widens. Research on the deadlift has found that grip fatigue is one of the most common causes of failed heavy attempts, and it becomes a bigger factor as the weight approaches your maximum. On lighter sets your grip barely notices. On your heaviest work, above roughly 85 percent of your one-rep max, it is often the first thing to break.
There is also a simple mechanical wrinkle. A standard round barbell wants to roll open your fingers as you lift. The heavier it gets, the harder that rolling force works against you, which is why grip becomes the deciding factor precisely when the weights get interesting.
Choosing a grip: what each one trains
How you hold the bar changes both how much you can lift and how much your forearms are worked. The three main options trade off in a useful way.

Electromyography studies of the deadlift show a clear pattern: the double overhand grip drives the most forearm muscle activity, while the mixed grip produces the least because the bar is locked in place rather than being actively held shut. That gives you a plan. Train with a double overhand grip for as long as you can hold it to build the grip itself, then switch to a mixed or hook grip for your heaviest sets when moving the load is the point.
Reaching for a mixed grip on every warm-up set because it is easier. You skip the exact stimulus that would make your grip stronger. Keep your lighter sets double overhand and save the secure grips for when the weight genuinely demands them.
Where lifting straps fit in
Straps wrap around the bar and your wrists so the load hangs from the strap instead of your fingers. The reflex in many gyms is to treat them as cheating. That misses the point. If your goal on a given exercise is to overload your back and legs, and your grip is the only thing stopping you, straps let you train the muscles you actually came to train.
Research comparing strapped and unstrapped deadlifts found that straps let people move the bar faster and grip more securely at heavy loads, with lower perceived effort in the hands. That is the whole idea. On high-rep back work, heavy rows, or deadlift volume where grip would tap out long before your back does, straps keep the stimulus on target.
- Use straps for overload work. Heavy or high-rep pulling where you want the back and legs pushed hard and the grip is only in the way.
- Go strapless to train grip. Keep your top sets, or a dedicated block of pulls, strap-free so your hands keep getting the challenge they need.
- Do not let straps hide a real weak point. If you compete raw or want a grip you can trust anywhere, you still need direct grip work. Straps free up your training, they do not replace grip training.
How to build a grip that never fails first
The good news is that grip responds quickly to a small amount of focused work, because it starts so undertrained in most people. You do not need a dedicated grip day. Two short doses a week, added to the end of sessions you already do, close the gap fast.
- Heavy holds. After your deadlifts, hold your top working weight, or a little more, at the top of a shrug position for 10 to 30 seconds. This trains the exact static demand that ends your sets.
- Loaded carries. Walk 20 to 40 metres carrying heavy dumbbells or a trap bar, two or three trips. Farmer's carries build grip endurance under a real, moving load.
- Dead hangs. Hang from a pull-up bar for time, building toward 60 seconds. Simple, joint-friendly, and it also decompresses your shoulders.
- Train the double overhand. Do your submaximal deadlift and row sets without a mixed grip or straps, so your fingers are always being asked to hold on.
Grip strength has a lot of room to grow in most trained lifters because it is rarely targeted directly. A few weeks of holds and carries often adds enough that the bar stops slipping and your back and legs become the limiter again, which is exactly where you want them.
