Most people never train their grip on purpose. They just find out, one heavy set at a time, that the bar slips out of their hands long before their back or legs are done. Your forearms and wrists are the handshake between you and the weight, and a weak handshake quietly caps everything you can pull, hold, or carry. The good news is that grip responds fast, and you barely need any extra equipment to build it.
The short version
- On deadlifts, rows, and carries, your grip usually fails first, which means you are training your hands, not the muscle you meant to work.
- Grip has three jobs: crushing (closing the hand), pinching (thumb against fingers), and holding on (endurance under a heavy bar). Each needs slightly different work.
- The best forearm builder is often just holding a heavy bar for time, plus direct wrist curls and extensions two to three times a week.
- Straps are a tool, not cheating. Use them to overload your back on high pulls, then train raw grip separately so it keeps up.

Why your grip caps the lifts that matter
Think about a heavy deadlift. Your legs drive, your back stays tight, and the bar rises. But the only thing keeping that bar attached to you is your fingers curled around a smooth steel bar that is actively trying to roll open. When your grip gives out, the set ends, no matter how much your legs had left. The same story plays out on rows, pull-ups, and loaded carries.
This matters for two reasons. First, you are leaving strength on the table: your back could handle more than your hands will let it hold. Second, and more sneakily, when your grip is the weak link, every heavy pull secretly becomes grip training instead of back training. You feel wrecked, but the muscle you meant to build barely got the message.
Grip is also not one thing. Researchers and coaches usually split it into a few types: crushing strength (closing your hand around something), pinching strength (thumb pressing against fingers, like holding a weight plate flat), and what lifters call supporting grip or holding on (keeping your fingers shut while a heavy bar tries to pry them open over many seconds). The deadlift lives almost entirely in that last category, which is why a person with a firm handshake can still lose a heavy bar.
If your deadlift, rows, or carries always end with your hands opening rather than your target muscle failing, your grip is the ceiling. Raise it and several lifts move up at once.
What you are actually training
Most of the muscles that close your hand do not sit in your hand at all. They live in your forearm, and long tendons run down to your fingers like puppet strings. When you build a stronger grip, you are mostly building bigger, stronger forearm flexors on the palm side, along with the extensors on the back side that keep your wrist stable.
That is why real grip work also thickens and toughens your forearms, and why it protects your wrists. A wrist that wobbles under a heavy dumbbell or folds back during a front squat is often not weak in the joint itself. It is weak in the forearm muscles that are supposed to hold the joint in a strong position. Train those and the wrist stops being a liability.

How to train it (the moves that carry over)
You do not need a drawer full of gadgets. A barbell, some dumbbells, and a little patience cover most of it. The trick is to hit each job, not just do wrist curls forever.
- Heavy holds and carries for supporting grip. Grab a loaded barbell or two heavy dumbbells and just hold, or walk, until your grip is nearly done. Aim for hard sets of 20 to 40 seconds. This is the single best carryover to deadlifts, because it trains the exact thing that fails.
- Wrist curls and reverse wrist curls. Rest your forearms on your thighs or a bench, let the weight roll toward your fingertips, then curl it back up. Do the palms-up version for the flexors and the palms-down version for the extensors. Both directions keep the wrist balanced and healthy.
- Direct forearm work with a thick grip. Wrap a towel around a bar or dumbbell handle to make it fat, then do holds or rows. A thicker handle forces your hand to work far harder and hammers crushing strength.
- Pinch holds for the thumb. Pinch two weight plates together, smooth sides out, and hold for time. Awkward and humbling, but it builds the thumb strength that ordinary curls never touch.
- Train it fresh, not just at the end. Grip that is already fried from a heavy session will not get a strong training stimulus. Do a couple of hard grip sets when your hands are relatively fresh, two to three times a week.
If you only add a single thing, make it a heavy bar hold at the end of your deadlift or row day: load a bar you can barely keep hold of and hang on for 20 to 30 seconds. Two or three sets, twice a week, moves the needle quickly.
Where straps fit (and where they don't)
Lifting straps loop around your wrist and the bar so the weight hangs on the strap, not on your fingers. Loud gym opinion says using them is cheating. That is the wrong way to think about it. Straps are simply a tool that lets you take grip out of the equation when grip is not the point.
The smart approach is to separate the two goals. When you want to overload your back on heavy rows or high-rep pulls, and your grip would give out first, strap up so your back gets the full dose. Then, on other sets or other days, train your raw grip directly with holds and carries so it keeps climbing. That way you build a strong back and a strong grip, instead of letting a weak grip cap both.
Strapping into everything, forever, so your grip never gets trained at all. Then the day you compete, test a true one-rep max, or lift something in real life, your hands are the weak link again. Use straps on purpose, not by default.
A simple weekly plan
Grip recovers quickly and takes well to frequent, short doses. You are adding a few minutes to sessions you already do, not building a whole new workout.

Progress it exactly like any other lift: add a little time, a little weight, or a slightly thicker handle over the weeks. If your grip is badly behind, hit it three times a week for a month or two and it will catch up faster than you expect. If it is only a minor gap, twice a week keeps it in step with your pulls.
Forearms cross a lot of joints and can get cranky if you go from zero to daily maximal gripping. Build up gradually, and if your elbows or wrists start aching, cut the volume and add it back slowly rather than pushing through.
