People obsess over bar position, breathing, and how deep to go, then set their feet by accident. That is backwards. Your feet are your only contact with the floor, and their width and angle quietly decide how stable you feel, how deep you can sink, and how much work goes to your quads versus your hips and glutes. There is no single correct stance that suits every body. But there is a right stance for you, and finding it is one of the fastest ways to add stability and strength to your squat without changing anything else.

Why your feet decide the whole squat
The squat is a balancing act. You are trying to keep the bar stacked over the middle of your foot while your hips and knees bend. If your feet are set well, you have a wide, stable base and your joints can move through their natural range. If they are set poorly, you fight for balance, you cannot reach depth, and something feels pinched or blocked.
Two variables do most of the work: how far apart your feet are, and which way your toes point. Get those two right and a lot of common squat problems, like falling forward, feeling stuck halfway down, or knees that cave in, often improve on their own without any other change.
A base that lets you sit straight down into a stable, deep position with your knees tracking over your toes, and your hips free to move without pinching. Everything else is detail.
Stance width: what it changes
Roughly speaking, most people squat well somewhere between hip width and a bit outside shoulder width. Within that range, moving wider or narrower changes the feel and the emphasis of the lift.

The research broadly supports this. EMG studies find that gluteus maximus activity tends to increase with a wider stance, while the muscles on the inside of the thigh stay fairly involved across widths. The wider stance is a staple in powerlifting partly because it can shift some load from the knee toward the hip. None of this makes one stance correct. It just means width is a dial you can turn toward the emphasis and the depth you want.
Toe angle: point them where your hips want
Almost nobody squats best with their feet dead straight ahead. A little turnout, often somewhere around fifteen to thirty degrees, gives your hips room to open as you descend and lets your knees track outward instead of caving in. The exact angle that works for you depends on the shape of your own hip sockets, which is why copying someone else's stance can feel wrong even when it looks textbook.
The rule that always holds is simple: your knees should track in the same direction your toes point. If your toes point out at twenty degrees, your knees should travel out over them, not cave inward. When toe angle and knee travel disagree, you get that pinched, blocked feeling at the bottom, and your knees can drift into a weaker position.
Toes pointing one way while your knees cave the other way. That mismatch is where the bottom of the squat feels pinched and where knees end up in a poor line. Match the two and the block often disappears.
How to find your stance
Rather than guess, test. This takes five minutes and it beats any generic recommendation, because it lets your own hips tell you what works.
- Do the jump test for width. Jump straight up a few times and notice where your feet land. That natural athletic width is usually a great starting stance for your body.
- Try three toe angles. Do a few bodyweight squats with your toes near straight, then at a moderate turnout, then a bit wider. Keep the angle where you sink deepest with the least pinching.
- Check your depth and comfort. At your chosen stance you should be able to reach at least parallel, hips below the top of your knees, without your lower back rounding under or your torso pitching far forward.
- Nudge for your goal. Want more quads and an upright torso, go a touch narrower. Want more hips and glutes, or you have tight ankles, go a touch wider. Depth matters for the glutes, so keep whatever stance lets you squat deep and clean.
Once you find a stance that feels stable, deep, and pinch-free, mark it. Note where your heels sit relative to the rack or the lines on the platform so you can set up the same way every session. Consistency in your setup is half of consistency in your squat.
