Stress has a bad reputation it does not fully deserve. The stress response is one of the most useful things your body can do: in a genuine emergency it sharpens your focus, speeds your heart, and floods your muscles with fuel in seconds. The problem is not stress itself. The problem is duration. That system was built to fire hard and then switch off, and modern life rarely lets it switch off. When the alarm keeps ringing for weeks and months, the same chemistry that once protected you starts causing slow, quiet harm across your whole body. You often do not feel it happening until something gives. This is how that damage builds, and what actually turns the dial back down.

What cortisol and the stress response actually do
The response runs largely through a loop between the brain and the adrenal glands, sometimes called the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis. Its headline chemical is cortisol. In a short burst, cortisol is helpful: it raises blood sugar for quick energy, dampens processes that can wait, like digestion and some immune activity, and keeps you alert. Adrenaline handles the immediate surge, cortisol handles the sustained response.
Kept high for too long, those same useful actions become liabilities. Persistently raised blood sugar, blood pressure, and inflammation are fine as a brief emergency setting and corrosive as a permanent one. In the landmark description of this, the body is not being poisoned by a toxin. It is being worn down by mediators that are protective in the short term and damaging when the response is repeated, prolonged, or never shut off.
Allostatic load: the slow bill comes due
The scientist Bruce McEwen gave this accumulating cost a name: allostatic load. Allostasis is the body's ability to stay stable by constantly changing, raising and lowering its systems to meet demands. Allostatic load is the wear and tear that builds up when those systems are pushed too often, for too long, or fail to reset. It is the difference between a car driven hard on a track day and one redlined every day for a year.
This framing matters because it explains why chronic stress can harm you even when no single day feels catastrophic. The damage is cumulative and quiet. Small, repeated overuse of the stress systems adds up in the background, which is exactly why people are so often surprised when a stress related problem finally surfaces.

Because the stress systems touch almost every organ, chronic stress does not have one symptom. It has many, spread across the body. A review of the evidence has linked psychological stress to several major disease processes, including depression and cardiovascular disease.

How to turn the dial back down
The goal is not to eliminate stress, which is neither possible nor desirable. It is to give your body regular, genuine all clear signals so the response resets instead of grinding on. A few levers do most of the work.
- Move your body most days. Regular physical activity is one of the most reliable ways to lower stress and improve mood. Public health guidance points to 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a week, and even a daily walk counts.
- Protect your sleep. Sleep is when the stress systems recover. A consistent wake time, less screen light late, and a wind down routine break the stress and poor sleep loop.
- Build in real recovery. Slow breathing, time outdoors, and genuine breaks all help switch the response off. The point is not the specific technique, it is regularly signalling safety.
- Stay connected. Talking to people you trust buffers stress in a measurable way. Isolation makes allostatic load worse, connection eases it.
- Get help when it is persistent. If stress is constant, overwhelming, or affecting your health, a doctor or therapist can help. That is a strength move, not a failure.
You cannot avoid stress, but you can make sure your body regularly gets the all clear. Recovery is not the reward for handling stress. It is the thing that stops stress from harming you.
