The difference between the useful kind and the harmful kind is not the size of the stressor. It is whether your body gets to switch the response off and recover. This is exactly how getting fitter works. A workout is a controlled dose of stress. You break the tissue down a little, then rest and eat and sleep, and your body rebuilds it slightly stronger. The workout is the stress; the adaptation happens in recovery. Skip the recovery and you get the damage without the benefit.

  2. Use exercise as deliberate good stress. Regular training gives your stress system a challenge with a built-in end and recovery, and over time it makes you more resilient to everyday stress too.
  3. Give ongoing stressors an edge. Where you can, turn open-ended pressure into something with a boundary: a finish time, a done-for-today line, a walk that marks the end of the work day.
  4. Build in real off-switches. Slow breathing, time outdoors, and genuine downtime all help the response wind down. The aim is to return to baseline, not just distract yourself.
  5. Get help when the load is stuck on. If stress feels constant, sleep is wrecked, or you feel run-down for weeks, that is worth talking to a doctor about. Chronic stress is a health issue, not a character flaw.
