Your stress response is not a flaw. It is one of the most useful systems your body owns, built to get you out of danger fast. The problem is that it was designed for a threat that arrives, peaks and passes, like escaping a predator. Modern stress often does none of those things. It lingers for months, and a system meant to fire in bursts ends up running in the background, quietly reshaping how your body works.

Seconds later, a slower chemical chain called the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis releases cortisol, a hormone that keeps energy available and the response going while the threat lasts.
A normal stress response starts, does its job, and then switches off. The alarm rings, you deal with the threat, and your body returns to calm. This on-and-off pattern is not harmful. It is one of the reasons you are alive.
What changes when it never switches off
The stress response is brilliant for a threat that ends. Modern life often serves up threats that do not: a difficult job, money worries, caring for someone, a phone that never stops. None of these can be run away from, so the alarm never gets its clear signal to stand down. The system stays partly on, day after day.
Researchers have a name for the cost of this. Allostatic load is the wear and tear the body accumulates when the stress response is switched on too often, kept on too long, or fails to shut off properly. The term comes from the neuroscientist Bruce McEwen, who spent decades showing how the very hormones that protect you in a crisis start to damage you when they never get to rest.
The same chemistry that is helpful in short bursts becomes harmful when it is constant. It is not that cortisol is bad. It is that cortisol was never meant to be high all the time.
Where chronic stress shows up in the body

One reason chronic stress is so sticky is that it feeds itself. Poor sleep raises stress hormones. Higher stress hormones worsen sleep. Feeling wired makes it harder to move, and less movement removes one of your best natural off-switches. Round it goes.
The useful news is that the loop runs both ways. Because the pieces are connected, improving one tends to ease the others. Get your sleep steadier and your stress chemistry calms. Move your body regularly and you help your stress system relearn how to switch off. You do not have to fix everything at once. You have to nudge the loop in the right direction and let it carry you.
How to help your body turn the alarm off
You cannot remove stress from a real life, and trying to is its own kind of stress. The goal is not zero stress. It is a stress response that fires when needed and then stands down. A few things reliably help the off-switch work.
- Move most days. Regular physical activity is one of the most consistent tools for lowering resting stress hormones and improving mood. Moderate movement most days does more than the occasional hard session.
- Protect sleep first. Sleep is where your stress system resets. A steady sleep and wake time does more for your cortisol rhythm than almost anything else.
- Build in recovery. Slow breathing, time outdoors, and genuine downtime are not indulgences. They are direct signals to your nervous system that the threat has passed.
- Reduce the always-on inputs. A constant stream of alerts keeps the alarm half-lit. Small boundaries around your phone and work give the system real gaps to recover in.
