If you have gone vegan, someone has probably warned you to combine your proteins, to always eat rice with beans or hummus with bread so you get a complete protein. It sounds scientific and it is deeply stuck in the culture. It is also outdated. The idea traces to a single popular book from 1971, its own author retracted the strict version a decade later, and the science since has been consistent: you do not need to combine proteins at every meal. Here is the real answer, and the far smaller thing you should pay attention to instead.

The combining rule is not something scientists invented, it is something a single influential book popularised. In 1971, Frances Moore Lappe published Diet for a Small Planet, which argued for eating lower on the food chain and, in doing so, told readers to carefully combine plant proteins at each meal to mimic the amino acid profile of meat. The book sold millions of copies, and the combining rule escaped into general knowledge as if it were established biology.
The crucial part usually gets left out. In the revised 1981 edition, Lappe herself walked the advice back, writing that she had overstated the problem and that for healthy people eating a varied plant diet, deliberate combining was unnecessary. The correction never travelled as far as the original claim, which is why the myth outlived its own author's retraction by decades.
What the science actually says
The nutrition science has been settled for a long time. A landmark review of plant proteins in human nutrition concluded that mixtures of plant proteins can serve as a complete, well-balanced source of amino acids for meeting human needs, without any requirement to consume complementary proteins in the same meal. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics states the same in its position on vegetarian diets: complementary proteins do not need to be eaten at the same meal, and protein from a variety of plant foods eaten over a day supplies enough of all amino acids.
The reason is straightforward. Different plant foods are limited in different amino acids. Legumes run low in methionine; grains run low in lysine. Eat both at some point in the day and each covers the other's shortfall from the shared amino acid pool. There is nothing special about doing it in one bite.
It helps to picture the timescale involved. Protein you eat is broken down into amino acids that circulate for hours, and your body is constantly recycling its own tissues, adding yet more amino acids to the same pool. So a meal is never assembled in isolation from a single plate. The muscle protein your body builds in the afternoon can draw on amino acids from breakfast, from lunch, and from your own overnight turnover all at once. Insisting that each meal be a complete protein misunderstands how the system works, a bit like demanding every deposit into a bank account be a whole round number before you are allowed to spend.

The shortcut: complete plant proteins
Some plant foods do not need any complementing because they already contain a good balance of all the essential amino acids. Soy, meaning tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk, is the standout: it is a complete protein with a solid amount of leucine, the amino acid that triggers muscle building. Quinoa and buckwheat are also broadly complete. A meal built on any of these is covered on its own, combining rule or not.
Because soy is complete and reasonably leucine-rich, leaning on it removes even the theoretical worry about amino acid balance. If a meal has tofu or tempeh in it, there is nothing left to combine. It is the simplest way to stop thinking about this entirely.
There is a grain of truth worth keeping from the old advice, though, and it is worth stating fairly. Plant proteins are digested a little less completely than animal ones and carry less leucine per gram, so eating a variety of them and enough in total genuinely does matter more for someone eating only plants. The mistake was never the idea that plant protein quality deserves a thought. The mistake was the specific, stressful instruction to pair foods at every single meal. Swap that rigid rule for simple variety across the day and you keep the useful insight while dropping the burden.
What to focus on instead
If combining is a non-issue, where should a vegan's attention go? On the two things that genuinely affect whether plant protein does its job.
- Hit your total daily protein. Aim for roughly 1.6 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight if you train. This matters far more than any pairing rule, and it is where most people actually fall short.
- Eat a variety of sources. Rotate soy, legumes, seitan, grains, nuts, and seeds across the week. Variety fills every amino acid gap automatically, no meal maths required.
- Favour the leucine-rich, complete sources. Build meals around soy where you can, since it covers amino acid balance and supports muscle without any pairing.
- Mind the real gaps: B12 and iron. These, not protein combining, are the nutrients a vegan diet must plan for. Supplement B12 and check iron if you feel run down.
So the honest bottom line: combining proteins at each meal is a myth that its own originator retracted more than forty years ago. Eat enough total protein from a variety of plant sources across the day, lean on soy when it is convenient, and let go of the rest. The mental energy you save is better spent on hitting your number and remembering your B12.
