For years, vegan protein powder deserved its reputation: gritty, beany, and heavy going in water. That reputation is now mostly out of date. Modern blends, better processing, and smarter flavouring have closed the gap with whey on both taste and results. The trick is knowing which type to reach for, because the differences between pea, soy, rice and blended powders are real, and they decide whether your shake is smooth or feels like drinking wet sand.

Why some vegan powders taste chalky
Chalkiness comes down to two things: particle texture and flavour masking. On top of that, some raw plant proteins carry a natural earthy or beany note that cheap flavouring fails to hide, leaving a dry, bitter aftertaste.
The good news is that both problems are solved in better products. Finer milling and isolates cut the grit, blends round out the flavour, and modern formulas lean on cocoa, vanilla and a touch of natural sweetener to cover the earthiness. The category has genuinely improved, so a bad experience five years ago is not a reason to write it off today.
An isolate has had more of the starch, fat and fibre stripped out, leaving a higher percentage of protein and usually a smoother texture. A concentrate keeps more of the plant, which can mean more fibre but also more grit. If chalk is your problem, an isolate or a blend built on isolates is the safer buy.

Do they actually build muscle?
This is the real question, and the answer is reassuring. When the protein dose and the amino acid leucine are matched, plant powders drive muscle growth just like whey. In a 12-week trial, people taking pea protein during resistance training gained muscle thickness comparably to those taking whey, and both beat placebo. A separate 8-week study found rice protein produced the same gains in muscle and strength as an equal dose of whey.
The one thing to respect is that some plant proteins are slightly lower in leucine, the amino acid that triggers muscle building, than whey. The simple fix is dose. Taking a slightly larger scoop, or choosing a blend that lists a solid leucine content, closes the gap. - Buy the smallest size first. Taste is personal and no review can predict your palate. Buy a sample or the smallest tub before committing to a big one.
Making any powder taste better
Even a mediocre powder becomes pleasant with the right method. Most chalkiness disappears the moment you stop shaking it in cold water and start treating it like a smoothie base.
