A walk by the sea can be a lovely part of living in Worthing. Sometimes, though, you would like someone to talk to along the way, or a plan that brings familiar faces into your week. You do not need a new address or a dramatic life change to want a wider circle.

Try giving the outing a shared purpose. A volunteer morning, a led neighbourhood walk and a community games group offer different ways to participate. These are everyday local options rather than a checklist of attractions, with room for people who have lived here for years and those still finding their feet.

Help care for Beach House Park

Adur & Worthing Councils’ volunteer mornings at Beach House Park run on the first Tuesday each month and some Saturdays, from 10am to noon. Meet the parks team by the Green Flag award near Palm Court Pavilion. Sessions are free drop-ins and equipment is supplied. Wear suitable outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear; check the current schedule, especially for Saturday dates.

A practical task can take the pressure off making conversation. You can ask what needs doing and work alongside somebody while learning more about the park. Ask the team which tasks suit your abilities rather than assuming every session involves the same physical work. An optional interest form is available, but the council also explicitly allows people to turn up.

Choose a short walk with company

The council’s St Lawrence Strollers listing gives a Tuesday meeting at 9:45am for a 10am start at St Lawrence Surgery, on the corner of St Lawrence Avenue and Rectory Road. There are one- and two-mile choices, returning to the surgery for refreshments with a suggested 50p donation. Contact the listed walk leader or surgery to confirm the current route and joining details.

The length gives you something concrete to compare with your energy and available time. Ask about surfaces, pace and any access requirements before attending. A group’s general welcome does not guarantee every route will suit everyone. If you enjoy the walk, staying for a drink afterwards can give a conversation a little more time without turning it into a long outing.

Find an indoor coffee-and-games routine

Worthing Homes’ Community House at 25 Dominion Road lists informal coffee-and-games groups on Monday and Wednesday mornings. The provider describes cards, dominoes and board games, and says everyone is welcome. Contact the team for the current start time, any charge and first-visit arrangements; these are not fully specified on the page.

Community House also offers support services and other activities, so explain that you are asking about the social group. General building hours are not the group timetable. An indoor option can suit a rainy day or someone who prefers sitting down to an outdoor task. Ask whether you can join an existing game, or begin with a cup of tea and see how the session works.

Stay local enough to make it easy

Beach House Park, St Lawrence Surgery and Dominion Road are different destinations. Choose by the actual journey from your home, not simply by the Worthing label. A plan that is easy to reach is more likely to remain enjoyable when the weather or your diary changes.

These examples are daytime options. If you work those hours, look at the park’s listed Saturday dates rather than assuming a weekday group has an evening equivalent. You can ask organisers about alternatives without committing to something that does not fit.

Make the second visit less of a leap

Before leaving a session you enjoyed, find out when it happens again. You might ask somebody whether they will be there, or remember what they were working on. Small points of familiarity can make returning feel easier.

You can also bring an acquaintance you would like to see more often. Sharing a practical task or a game gives you both something to enjoy even if the conversation is quiet at first. The aim is a routine that feels good to repeat, rather than an exhausting campaign to meet as many people as possible.
