New Orleans has more ways to meet people than a night out. A choir rehearsal, a beginner dance class or a table-game course gives you a shared activity and a reason to come back. Choose the one you would enjoy for its own sake, whether you are new to the city or ready for a different local routine.
NOLA Vox welcomes guests to its community choir rehearsals. The organisation says no audition or special preparation is needed to visit, and singers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome. Its rehearsals take place twice monthly on Thursday evenings at St. John Lutheran Fellowship Center, 3940 Iberville Street.
Check the choir’s rehearsal schedule for the next date or use its singer-interest form to ask about joining. The page does not state membership dues, so ask NOLA Vox directly about any ongoing cost. It is an open, mixed-age music group rather than an adults-only programme.
02Book a beginner ballet class
New Orleans Ballet Theatre’s Schramel Conservatory lists beginner and mixed beginner/intermediate adult classes during its Fall 2026 semester. Classes are described as drop-in, but you must still register and pay online in advance, submit a release form and bring ballet slippers. A single class is listed at $20, and space is limited.
Choose a level and session from the current adult schedule, check the price and availability, and arrive on time: the studio notes that evening doors lock at 6:30 p.m. It is at 920 Terpsichore Street. “Drop-in” means you do not need to sign up for a whole term; it does not mean you can arrive without booking.
03Learn Mah Jongg at the Uptown JCC
The New Orleans JCC’s Learn to Play Mah Jongg course introduces National Mah Jongg League rules and welcomes beginners; the JCC provides the current-year card. Its live page lists an Uptown series from October 26 to November 5, 2026, on Monday and Thursday evenings. Fees are $100 for members and $125 for non-members.
You must be able to attend the first session to register for the multi-session course. Check the live class page for remaining places and exact registration details, or call the JCC at 504-897-0143. The Uptown activity lounge is at 5342 St. Charles Avenue; the JCC also has separate Metairie programmes.
04Plan the route to the exact address
The choir, ballet studio and Uptown JCC are different venues. Use the New Orleans Regional Transit Authority trip planner with the address, date and finish time you choose, and check your way home before registering for an evening activity.
Local programmes change. Check the organiser links above for current dates, booking and access details. Spotted something out of date? Send us a correction.
