There is more than one way to feel part of Lincoln. You might want a game after a week at a desk, a musical challenge to work towards or a community space where sharing food makes conversation easier. The right starting point depends on what you would enjoy doing again.
These options are for people already living here as well as those settling in. They are different kinds of participation, not interchangeable social events. A basketball session needs a check-in, a concert choir asks for an audition and a community kitchen has a particular purpose.
01Join an adult basketball scrimmage
Lincoln Basketball runs adult pick-up basketball at Dean’s Sport and Leisure on Monks Road. Its published Saturday scrimmage is 12:30–2:30pm, with additional weeknight sessions that vary. Join the organiser’s Spond group and check in before attending. Use the live schedule for changes and ask about the session fee and suitable experience level.
If you played at school or university and miss having a game, tell the organiser how long you have been away. If you are new, ask which session is the right place to learn. A shared game provides plenty of natural interaction, but the sporting format should suit you too. Do not confuse the adult scrimmage with the separate junior coaching programme earlier on Saturdays.
02Work towards a concert with Lincoln Choral Society
Lincoln Choral Society rehearses on Mondays, 7:30–9:20pm, in the University of Lincoln’s Jackson Theatre in the Minerva Building. Joining involves an audition, normally at the start of spring or autumn term. Annual membership is £160, with a £10 student rate, and members are expected to attend at least 75% of rehearsals for a concert. Contact the chorus secretary about the next opportunity.
This suits someone looking for a musical commitment rather than a casual drop-in evening. Ask about the repertoire, audition and preparation expected before deciding to join. Working towards a concert can give you a shared goal and regular contact with the same people. Check the rehearsal venue carefully: the society’s concert setting and its weekly meeting place are not necessarily the same.
03Share food at Taste of Unity
Taste of Unity is a monthly community kitchen run through The Centre for Reconciliation. It offers free meals at Central Methodist Church Hall on the second Wednesday of the month, 4–6pm, bringing people from different backgrounds together. It is open to everyone and particularly supports people facing difficult circumstances. Contact the organiser about attending or use its volunteer form if you would like to help.
This is a community-support setting, separate from KF.Social dinners or a commercial restaurant event. Come with respect for that purpose. Sharing a meal can create room for ordinary conversation, while volunteering involves responsibilities that the team should explain. Ask about any dietary or access needs before attending; the published invitation does not establish that every requirement can be accommodated.
04Match the plan to the commitment
A basketball session can give your week an active focus. The choir asks for practice and regular attendance. The community kitchen offers a different kind of gathering built around food and mutual support. Choose the setting whose purpose you want to take part in, rather than treating every group only as a way to collect contacts.
Monks Road, the university campus and Central Methodist Church Hall are different destinations. Plan from the actual venue, including the journey home. If your availability varies, ask which options can accommodate that before committing to a regular role or term.
05Make returning easier
You can leave a first session with a small next step: another game to book, a membership question answered or a date to return. Remembering a name or following up on a shared interest helps a second conversation feel more familiar. There is room to build company at a pace that suits you.
