A good social plan does not always need to take over your weekend. In Leicester, you could spend a Tuesday learning a board game, a Wednesday singing with a group, or a weekday morning walking with people closer to home. The point is to find a setting where taking part gives you a natural reason to talk.
This guide is for residents as much as new arrivals. You may know the city well and still want a different routine, especially if friends have moved away or your working hours have changed. Pick one option that interests you, check the joining details and give yourself permission to be new at it.
01Join a social gaming table at ReRoll
ReRoll's Social Gaming night runs on Tuesdays at 6:30pm. The organiser advertises it specifically as a way to meet people and try different board games, with £5 entry and no booking required at the time of review. That makes it a clearer starting point for meeting others than booking an ordinary private table with people you already know.
Check the current listing before going and tell the team you are there for Social Gaming. You do not need to know which game you will love before trying something. The cafe also runs specialist card-game and role-playing events with different fees and booking rules; use the social night as your starting point unless one of those formats already interests you. Ask the venue directly about access or other requirements for your visit.
02Sing with the group in Stoneygate
Sing Social Leicester advertises a Wednesday evening singalong at Stoneygate Baptist Church on London Road, from 7:30 to 9pm. Lyrics appear on a screen and everyone sings together. There are no auditions or solos, and the organiser explicitly welcomes people who come on their own.
Membership is advertised at £30 a month, with online joining through the Leicester page. Check the current subscription and cancellation terms before paying; this is a recurring membership rather than a free drop-in. It may suit you if you enjoy music but do not want the preparation or performance focus of a traditional choir. The shared songs give the evening a structure even when you do not yet know anyone in the room.
03Find a regular walk near your part of Leicester
Live Well Walk More offers free, volunteer-led walks around the city. Its programme includes starts at libraries and community venues, so you can look for a practical local option rather than assuming every social activity means travelling into the centre.
Complete the programme's registration form before attending, or contact its team for help. Read the listing for your chosen walk: duration, route and meeting point matter, and one walk's details do not apply to all of them. This can be a useful daytime choice for someone with a free morning, someone rebuilding an exercise routine or a resident who would enjoy company while exploring a familiar area. Ask about pace and access needs before selecting a route.
04Match the commitment to your life
The three options ask for different things. Social Gaming is an advertised pay-per-visit evening; Sing Social has a monthly subscription; the walking programme is free but needs registration. Looking at those differences first helps you choose something you can actually repeat without stretching your budget or calendar.
If you are going alone, make the first visit a small experiment. Learn one game, sing for the evening or complete a suitable walk. You do not need to leave with a whole new friendship group. If you enjoyed yourself, returning gives the next conversation a starting point: you can recognise somebody, ask what they thought, or talk about the next session.
Check the return journey as well as the start time, particularly for evening plans on Granby Street or in Stoneygate. Residents of nearby towns should compare the actual route and finish time rather than treating the whole Leicester area as one short trip. A plan close to home can be the one you are most likely to keep.
