You can know Hull's streets well and still want a few more people to spend time with. Friends move, shifts change and hobbies get squeezed out of the week. Sometimes the useful change is a small one: an evening singing with a group, a morning making something, or a Saturday spent outdoors with other people.

The options below have different rhythms. One is a set of daytime creative groups, one is a term-time evening choir, and one is a weekly park event. They offer starting points for established residents and newcomers alike. You do not need to try everything; choose an activity you would enjoy even before you know anyone there.

Make something at Lonsdale Community Centre

The council-hosted Lonsdale timetable lists several weekly creative groups. Card Making runs on Monday mornings for £3, Knit ’n Natter on Tuesday mornings is free, and the General's Art Coup on Wednesday mornings costs £3. All three are advertised from 10am to noon with a walk-in format.

Knitting, crochet and cross-stitch learners are welcome at the textile group; the art group advertises lessons and ongoing projects for different abilities. Contact the centre before a first visit to confirm the current session, fee and materials, particularly around holidays. The published timetable has no clear last-updated date. A project gives you something concrete to ask about, whether you are learning a skill or returning to one you used to enjoy.

Try a Thursday with Hull Community Voices

Hull Community Voices meets during term time on Thursdays, from 7:30 to 9pm, at Friends Meeting House on Bean Street. The choir learns by ear, does not audition and does not require music reading. Its website welcomes drop-ins and offers the first session free; afterwards it suggests a £4.50 donation per session, or £4 at the concession rate.

Check the choir's linked updates for the next rehearsal, and email if you have questions before arriving. Its site describes singing while standing, so ask about any seating or access needs rather than assuming the format will suit everybody. Singing with others gives the evening a shared focus; you can enjoy taking part without needing to fill every pause with small talk.

Share a Saturday morning at Peter Pan Park

Hull's community directory lists Peter Pan parkrun as a free Saturday 5k at 9am. You can walk, jog or run, and there are also volunteering and spectating options. Register with parkrun before your first participation and bring a scannable barcode if you want a recorded time.

Follow the directory's official event link to check cancellations, the course and current meeting details. If helping appeals more than taking part in the 5k, contact the event about volunteer roles first. A recurring outdoor plan can give you something to look forward to without turning exercise into a competition.

Pick the kind of company you want

A craft table is useful when you like chatting alongside an activity. A choir gives an evening a clear beginning and end. A park morning may work better if you want time outdoors. Choosing by format is more helpful than deciding you ought to become more outgoing or attend whatever attracts the largest crowd.

You can go alone, or ask somebody you already know to try a session with you. Either way, leave room to speak to other participants. Ask about the project in front of you, the next rehearsal or how someone got involved. If an exchange feels easy, returning to the same activity gives it a chance to continue.

Think about the journey as well as the timetable. A weekday morning at Lonsdale, a Thursday evening on Bean Street and a Saturday start at Peter Pan Park ask for different plans. If you are travelling from outside Hull, check the exact route and return service. A convenient trip for work does not always translate into a convenient social evening.
