You can know Huddersfield’s streets and still want more people in your week. Perhaps a change in working hours has made old plans difficult, or you would like an interest that takes you beyond colleagues and family. A group built around doing or learning something can make the first introduction easier.

Here are three different starting points: singing with HCS Voices, watching an artist demonstrate their work and joining a daytime community programme in Moldgreen. They give longtime residents and newcomers alike a reason to participate, with different commitments and costs.

Try HCS Voices without an audition

HCS Voices is Huddersfield Choral Society’s community choir for adults over 18, with no audition and different experience levels welcome. Its published rehearsal is Wednesday, 7–9pm, at New North Road Baptist Church on New North Parade. The listed fee is £65 per term. Contact the choir to arrange a free trial and confirm the next rehearsal.

If you enjoy singing but have never joined a choir, ask how a first rehearsal works and what you should bring. You can be a beginner without treating the evening as a test. Learning the same music gives you something to discuss with the people around you. Before committing to a term, check how the weekly time and journey home fit your other plans.

See an artist at work with Huddersfield Art Society

Huddersfield Art Society’s Saturday open meetings feature artist demonstrations or talks at Moldgreen United Reformed Church. Non-members pay £10, compared with £6 for members, and refreshments are included. The current programme lists selected Saturdays from 2–4pm, rather than every week. Check the upcoming date and contact the society about attending and the precise venue entrance.

Watching a technique unfold gives you something concrete to ask about afterwards. You might sketch regularly, be returning to art after years away or simply enjoy seeing how a painting is made. This format is a demonstration or talk, so do not assume it is a hands-on lesson. Ask whether you need to reserve a place and what other activities are available if you enjoy the first meeting.

Explore Mondays at Moldgreen

Kirklees’ listing for Mondays at Moldgreen URC describes a weekly programme of activities at Moldgreen United Reformed Church on Old Wakefield Road. The autumn 2026 listing gives Mondays, 11am–3pm, excluding bank holidays, with £2 to attend. Different ages and abilities are welcome. Follow the organiser links for the current activity and any late changes before going.

This may fit if you want daytime company and would like to try a varied programme rather than one fixed hobby. Ask what is happening on your chosen Monday, whether you should book and whether you need to attend the whole session. Although it uses the same church as the Art Society, it is a separate activity with its own organiser and arrangements.

Start with the format that suits you

A choir involves taking part in music over time. An art demonstration lets you explore an interest through a single event. The Monday programme offers a broader community setting. Think about whether you want a recurring practice, a particular subject or simply a regular reason to get out during the day.

New North Parade and Moldgreen are different journeys. Check the venue itself rather than relying on an organisation’s office address, and leave enough time to arrive without rushing. Clear directions can make an unfamiliar first visit much more comfortable.

Give a conversation a next chapter

After an enjoyable session, ask what is happening next. You might recognise someone’s voice at rehearsal or remember a question they asked during a demonstration. Those small points of familiarity can make returning easier, without putting pressure on the first meeting to become an instant friendship.
