A half-finished puzzle or a jacket that needs mending can be a surprisingly useful starting point for a conversation. In Derby, libraries and repair sessions offer ways to spend time with other people while doing something together. You have a shared task to return to when you do not quite know what to say next.
These are options for people who already call Derby home as well as people settling in. Perhaps your familiar social circle is busy, you have a weekday free, or you would enjoy learning from somebody outside work. Start with the activity that appeals to you; meeting people does not have to mean organising a big night out.
01Work on a puzzle at Allenton Library
Allenton Library's Jigsaw Club welcomes people who enjoy puzzles and would like some company. Its calendar lists Monday and Wednesday sessions from 10:30am to 2:30pm. Puzzles are available, you may bring your own, and there is no need to book. Bring your own tea or coffee; the library provides cups and a kettle.
Check the calendar for your chosen date before leaving. The listing does not state an entry price, so ask the library if you need to confirm costs or access arrangements. You can begin with a simple question about the puzzle on the table. A shared task takes some of the pressure off introducing yourself to a whole room at once.
02Take your knitting or needlework to a nearby group
Derby Libraries' Knit and Natter programme welcomes beginners and experienced makers. Bring your knitting, crochet or needlework; the organiser says booking is not required. The current calendar includes Allestree on Thursday mornings, Mickleover on Thursday afternoons and Chaddesden on Friday afternoons, among other branches.
Use the branch-specific listing to check the time rather than assuming every group follows the same schedule. If you are starting from scratch, ask what materials to bring and whether the session will suit you. A small project is plenty: the social value is having something to talk about and a reason to return, not producing an impressive finished piece.
03Learn to mend at the Museum of Making
The Museum of Making's Clothes and Textiles Repair Café asks you to bring a garment and stay with the repair, learning alongside its facilitators. The programme is quarterly, on the third Saturday of January, April, July and October. It is free with a suggested £3 donation, and advance booking is required so the team can prepare for your mend.
Follow the museum's current event link to choose an available session and describe the item you would like help with. This suits someone who wants a practical afternoon and a new skill. Because it happens quarterly, it works best as an occasional plan rather than your only chance to meet people regularly.
04Consider a neighbourhood repair session too
Derby City Council's repair-café directory lists a free drop-in at Mickleover Library on the last Saturday of each month, from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Volunteers help with items including small electricals and textiles. Ask about your item before taking it along; a listing is not a guarantee that every repair can be completed.
If you already have repair or sewing skills, the council also gives a contact for people interested in helping. Enquiring about volunteering is another way to participate, subject to the organiser's needs and arrangements.
05Choose a routine you can keep
A weekly group and a quarterly workshop make different demands on your diary. Think about whether you want familiar faces over time, a reason to leave the house on a free morning, or an occasional project with other people. You can try one without committing to a whole new lifestyle.
Check the actual branch or venue and your journey home. Allenton, Mickleover and the Museum of Making are different destinations; the most appealing activity on paper may not be the easiest one to repeat. After a visit you enjoyed, a simple “Are you coming next time?” gives a conversation a natural continuation.
