You have hit a wall on a lift, so you do the obvious thing: add more sets. If some volume built the muscle, more should build more, right? Sometimes. But volume is only useful if you can recover from it, and past a certain point, extra sets stop adding growth and start eating into the recovery you need to actually progress. A stall is often a signal to look elsewhere first.

Volume has a curve, not a straight line
There is a real dose-response relationship between how many hard sets you do per muscle each week and how much it grows. Meta-analyses find that, up to a point, more weekly sets tend to produce more muscle. That is the kernel of truth behind the add more sets instinct.
The catch is the phrase up to a point. The benefit is not a straight line that keeps climbing forever. It curves and flattens. Early sets give you most of the return. Later sets give less and less, until you reach a level where extra work adds fatigue without adding growth. Push past that and you can actually go backwards, because the fatigue outpaces your ability to recover and adapt.
Your body can only turn training into muscle at the speed it can recover. Volume you cannot recover from is not a bigger stimulus. It is just a bigger hole to climb out of. This is sometimes called your maximum recoverable volume, the most hard work you can do and still adapt to.
Why adding sets to a stall often backfires
When a lift stalls, adding volume feels productive because you leave the gym more tired. But fatigue is not progress. If you were already near the top of what you can recover from, the extra sets tip you over the edge. Now you turn up to the next session under-recovered, your performance dips, and the lift moves even less. It looks like you need to try harder, so you add more, and the spiral continues.
There is also the problem of junk volume. Once you have done your genuinely hard sets, the extra ones you tack on tend to be either too tired to be productive or done at a lower effort just to hit a number. They add recovery cost without adding a meaningful stimulus. You feel busy, but the sets are not paying rent.
None of this means volume is bad. For many people who are truly under-training, adding a few sets is exactly the right call. The mistake is treating more volume as the automatic first answer when it is often the wrong one, and an expensive one to get wrong.
Check these before you add a single set
A plateau usually has a cheaper cause than a lack of volume. Work through these first. Most of the time the real problem is on this list.

Adding volume is near the bottom of the list on purpose. It is the highest cost move because it demands more recovery. Spend the cheap fixes first. Very often one of them, and not more sets, is what unsticks the lift.
When more volume genuinely is the answer
Sometimes you really are under-training. If your effort is high, your progression has been steady, your sleep and stress are handled, and a muscle simply is not growing, adding volume can be the right lever. The signs you have room to add are that you recover well between sessions, you are rarely deeply fatigued, and your working sets already feel hard but leave you fresh the next day.
If that is you, add volume the way you would add weight to a bar: gradually. Do not jump from ten sets a week to twenty. Add roughly two to four hard sets for the muscle, hold there for two to three weeks, and watch how you recover. If performance holds or improves and you are not getting run down, you can add a little more. If sleep, mood, or your lifts start to suffer, you have found your ceiling and should step back.
- Confirm the cheap fixes are handled. Effort, progression, recovery, and technique are all in order and the muscle still is not growing.
- Add a small block of volume. Roughly two to four extra hard sets per week for that muscle, not a wholesale jump.
- Hold and observe. Give it two to three weeks. Watch recovery and performance, not just the pump in the session.
- Adjust from the evidence. Progressing and recovering well means you can add a touch more. Getting run down means you have found your limit and should pull back.
