Ask two people how they warm up and you will often hear two half-answers. One does five minutes on a bike and calls it done. The other skips the cardio and goes straight to light sets of the lift. Each has half of a good warm-up. A complete one has two distinct stages that do two different jobs: a general warm-up that prepares the whole body, and a specific warm-up that prepares the exact movement you are about to load. Understanding the split is what turns a warm-up from a box you tick into something that actually improves the session.

The second is that any specific lift, a squat, a bench press, a deadlift, is a skill your body performs better after a few rehearsal reps at that exact movement.
A general warm-up fixes the first problem. A specific warm-up fixes the second. They are not interchangeable. Ten minutes on a bike leaves you warm but still cold to the barbell squat, because you have not touched that pattern. Ramp-up sets alone leave your first lift as your warm-up while your whole body is still idling. You want both, in order.
General gets the whole body warm and moving. Specific gets the exact lift rehearsed and ready. A full warm-up is general first, then specific.
The general warm-up: prepare the whole body
The general warm-up is broad and non-specific on purpose. Its job is to raise your core and muscle temperature, lift your heart rate, and get blood moving to the muscles you are about to use. Warmer muscle contracts and relaxes faster and moves through a fuller range with less resistance.
This is where a few minutes of easy aerobic work earns its place: a bike, a rower, a brisk walk on an incline, or simply jogging and moving on the spot. It is also where broad dynamic drills fit, such as leg swings, arm circles, and hip openers, taking your major joints through their range without loading them. You are not trying to get tired here. You are trying to go from cold to warm.
You should feel a little warm, breathing slightly harder, and your joints should feel looser than when you walked in. That is the whole target. If you are out of breath or fatigued, you overdid the general warm-up and ate into the session.
The specific warm-up: prepare the exact movement
Now you narrow down. The specific warm-up rehearses the precise movement you are about to train, at gradually increasing load. For most lifting this means ramp-up sets: you start light and build in a few steps toward your working weight.
This does two things a general warm-up cannot. It grooves the movement pattern, so your body has already visited that exact position and bar path several times before the first heavy rep. And it lets your nervous system tune in to the load, which is why a working set often feels easier and more stable after a proper ramp-up than after none. The specific warm-up is where readiness turns into performance.

A heavy squat is a good example. The best rehearsal for a heavy squat is lighter squats, not a bike. You might warm up on a bike for the temperature, but the specific work, the empty bar, then progressively heavier sets, is what actually readies you for the top set.
Putting the two together
Here is how the two stages fit into a single warm-up before a lifting session. The exact times flex with how heavy the day is, but the order does not change.
- General: get warm, about 5 minutes. A few minutes of easy cardio to raise your temperature, then broad dynamic drills for the joints your session will use. End it warm, not tired.
- Specific: rehearse the movement, about 5 minutes. Ramp up in the actual lift from light to your working weight over several sets. The heavier your top set, the more ramp-up sets you want between the empty bar and the working weight.
- Repeat the specific step for each main lift. You do the general warm-up once at the start, but each new main movement gets its own short ramp-up. You would not go straight to a heavy bench with no lighter bench sets, even if you already squatted.
Only general: minutes of cardio, then straight into a heavy lift with no ramp-up, so the working set is your first rehearsal. Only specific: ramp-up sets on a cold, idling body. Both leave something on the table. Do the pair, in order.
