Inflammation has become a buzzword, and hs-CRP is the blood test people reach for to put a number on it. It is genuinely useful, but only in a narrow way. It does not tell you whether your knee is sore or your gut is unhappy. What it tracks is the quiet, body-wide inflammation that sits behind heart disease, and even then it earns its place only for certain people at certain moments. Knowing when the test helps, and when it just scares you with a number that means nothing, is the whole point.
The short version
- hs-CRP is high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, a liver-made protein that rises with inflammation. The high-sensitivity version reads the low range that ordinary CRP tests miss.
- As a rough guide to heart risk, under **1.0 mg/L** is low, **1.0 to 3.0 mg/L** is average, and above **3.0 mg/L** is high.
- A reading above 10 mg/L usually means a recent infection, injury, or flare-up, not your baseline. You retest, you do not panic.

What hs-CRP actually measures
C-reactive protein is made by your liver whenever your body ramps up inflammation. A bad infection sends it through the roof, which is why a standard CRP test has been used for decades to spot serious illness. The problem is that standard CRP is a blunt instrument at the low end. It can tell the difference between calm and a raging infection, but not between calm and slightly-simmering.
The high-sensitivity version, hs-CRP, is the same protein measured with a more precise method. It can read the low concentrations that matter for a slow process like heart disease, where inflammation quietly damages artery walls over years. That is the entire reason the test exists: to see the small signal, not the loud one. It is the same molecule, just measured carefully enough to be useful for long-term risk rather than acute illness.
hs-CRP is non-specific. It tells you that inflammation is present, not where it is coming from. That single fact explains most of the confusion around the test and most of the ways it gets misread.
What the numbers mean
For heart risk, a scientific statement from the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention set out three simple bands. They are a guide, not a diagnosis, and your doctor reads them alongside everything else about you.

That last row is the one people miss. If you test while fighting a cold, days after a hard marathon, or with a flaring joint, your number can leap above 10 mg/L and mean almost nothing about your long-term risk. This is why a single high reading is never the end of the story. The sensible move is to retest once you are well and rested, and to treat the two readings together.
Why anyone cares about this number
The reason hs-CRP got attention is that it seems to add information on top of cholesterol. In the large JUPITER trial, people whose LDL cholesterol was normal but whose hs-CRP was raised (at or above 2.0 mg/L) still had a meaningful heart risk, and treating them with a statin lowered that risk. In other words, the marker flagged people who looked fine on a standard cholesterol check but were not.
That is the honest case for the test. It can catch risk that cholesterol alone misses. But notice the setup: it helped guide a treatment decision in people who were already being assessed for heart risk. It was not a wellness gadget for the worried well. The value lives in the decision it informs, not in the number by itself.
Who should actually test it
Guidelines are cautious here for good reason. hs-CRP is most useful for people sitting at intermediate heart risk, where the decision to start a medication or push harder on lifestyle is genuinely on the knife's edge. In that situation, a raised marker can tip a borderline call toward acting sooner.
- Potentially useful: you are at intermediate 10-year heart risk and you and your doctor need a tiebreaker to guide treatment.
- Usually not useful: you are young, healthy, and low-risk, and you are testing out of curiosity. A random number here mostly creates anxiety.
- Misleading right now: you are unwell, recently injured, recovering from hard training, or have a known inflammatory condition flaring. Wait and retest.
- Not a diagnostic tool: hs-CRP cannot tell you what is inflamed or diagnose any specific disease on its own.
Testing hs-CRP in isolation and then chasing the number. Because it is non-specific and bounces around with everyday life, a single hs-CRP reading with no clinical context is one of the easiest lab values to over-interpret. It belongs in a conversation with your doctor, alongside blood pressure, cholesterol, and your history, not in a vacuum.
What actually lowers it
If your hs-CRP is genuinely raised on a calm, well-rested retest, the good news is that the levers that lower it are the same ones that lower heart risk overall. None of them are exotic, and most of them help you feel better long before any blood test changes.
- Move regularly. A meta-analysis of exercise trials found training lowers CRP, with an average drop of about 0.83 mg/L, and larger falls in people who also lost body fat. Both cardio and strength work count.
- Lose excess body fat. Fat tissue, especially around the middle, actively produces inflammatory signals. Losing even a modest amount often brings the number down.
- Stop smoking. Smoking raises baseline inflammation. Quitting is one of the single biggest favours you can do your arteries and your CRP.
- Eat more like the basics you already know. More vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and oily fish or their plant sources; less ultra-processed food and excess alcohol. Beans, lentils, walnuts, and flax offer the same anti-inflammatory building blocks as animal foods.
- Fix your sleep. Poor and short sleep nudges inflammation up. Protecting your sleep is quietly part of the same picture.
You do not need a supplement stack to move this number. The habits that lower hs-CRP are the habits that build a healthier body anyway, so you win even if you never test again.
