"Stubborn fat" usually means one of two things: a plateau where the scale stops moving, or a last layer that refuses to leave even though you are lean everywhere else. In both cases the instinct is the same, and usually wrong. People add more cardio, cut calories harder, and quietly drop the weights because lifting feels like it is not burning much. But resistance training is not in your plan to burn calories in the session. Why lifting feels useless for fat loss (and why that is misleading)
Stand on a treadmill for 30 minutes and a screen tells you it burned 300 calories. Very low calories plus hours of cardio and no lifting is the fastest way to lose muscle along with fat. In plain terms: you keep more of the good stuff and lose more of the stuff you actually want gone.
A separate strand of research shows resistance training on its own, without a strict diet, still reduces body fat percentage and fat mass in healthy adults. So the tissue you are protecting is also being worked toward the shape you want. The deficit shrinks the fat, the lifting keeps and defines the muscle underneath it.

Now the two threads connect. Muscle is metabolically active tissue: it costs energy to keep alive even when you are sitting still. When you lose muscle, your body needs fewer calories each day just to exist. That means the deficit you set up last month is smaller today, because your maintenance calories dropped with your muscle.
This is the quiet mechanism behind a lot of plateaus. Someone crash-diets, loses muscle, their daily burn falls, and suddenly the calories that used to create a deficit are now just maintenance. The scale stops. Their answer is to cut food further and add more cardio, which burns yet more muscle, which lowers the burn again. It is a spiral, and it is driven by losing the tissue that lifting exists to protect.
Resistance training breaks the spiral at its source. By holding onto muscle, you hold onto a higher daily energy burn, so the deficit you set actually stays a deficit. The last stubborn kilos come off because the machinery that removes them never got dismantled.

- Keep lifting heavy, keep the load. The signal that tells your body to keep muscle is challenging load, not sweat. Do not swap your normal weights for tiny ones and high reps just because you are cutting. Aim to keep the weight on the bar as close to your fed strength as you can.
- Hold your volume, do not gut it. Cutting your sets in half to "save energy" tells your body the muscle is not needed. Keep most of your working sets across the week. You may need slightly more rest and a little less at the very end of the session, but the core stays.
- Prioritise protein. Protein gives your body the raw material to defend muscle and helps you stay full in a deficit. Higher intakes during a cut are well supported. Include plant sources you enjoy, such as tofu, tempeh, lentils, edamame, and soy milk, which all count toward the total.
- Add cardio as a tool, not a replacement. Cardio and daily steps help widen the deficit. Use them alongside lifting, not instead of it. If something has to give on a low-energy day, protect the strength work and trim the extra cardio.
- Be patient with the last layer. The final stubborn area comes off late by design, set mostly by your genetics and hormones. Stay in a modest deficit, keep lifting, and let the order your body uses play out. There is no exercise that forces one spot to empty first.
What 'stubborn fat' really is
It is worth naming the second meaning of stubborn fat: the last layer that clings to the hips, lower belly, or backs of the arms while everything else leans out. This is real, but it is not a training problem you can solve with a special exercise. Where you lose fat first and last is mostly wired by genetics and hormones. Those areas are simply late in your body's queue.
Resistance training still helps here, just not by targeting the spot. It keeps the muscle underneath, so when the fat finally does come off, there is shape and definition rather than flatness. The move is not more crunches or more arm work to burn that fat. It is to keep the overall deficit going, keep lifting, and trust the order. The stubborn layer is last, not permanent.
