The deadlift looks simple: pick the bar up, put it down. That is exactly why it hides so many small faults. You do not need a perfect textbook pull. You need to stop the few mistakes that quietly cap your numbers and, on a heavy set when you are tired, put load through your back that your hips and legs should be sharing. Almost every one of them comes back to the same three things: keeping the bar close, letting your hips and shoulders rise together, and bracing before you move. Fix those and most of the rest sorts itself out.

- The single most common fault is letting the bar drift away from your body. A bar that swings forward multiplies the load on your lower back.
- Hips shooting up first turns your pull into a stiff legged good morning. Your hips and shoulders should rise together off the floor.

Mistake 1: letting the bar drift away from you
If there is one fault that hurts more backs and stalls more numbers than any other, it is the bar drifting forward. The further the bar sits in front of your mid foot, the longer the lever on your lower back, and the harder your spine has to work just to hold position. You feel it as a pull that lives in your lower back rather than your hips and legs, and heavy singles suddenly feel much heavier than they should.
The fix is to keep the bar against your body the whole way up. Set it over the middle of your feet, close enough to lightly brush your shins, and then think about dragging it up your legs. Engage your lats by imagining you are pulling the bar into you or tucking your armpits down, and the bar stays close on its own. Many lifters wear long socks precisely because the bar should stay near enough to graze the shins.
If the bar swings out around your knees, or you feel it drift forward as you stand, the lever is working against you. Lighten the load, reset over your mid foot, and pull the slack out with your lats tight before every rep.
Mistake 2: hips that shoot up first
Watch a rep from the side and you can often see it in the first inch: the hips fly up, the bar barely moves, and the shoulders drop behind. Now your back is doing all the early work while your legs sit idle, and the bar is guaranteed to drift forward to follow. This is one of the most common ways a deadlift becomes a back exercise instead of a full body pull.
The cause is usually setting the hips too low, so the only way out is to raise them before you can push the floor. Set your hips at a height where your back is flat and your shins are near vertical, then think push the floor away and bring the bar and hips up together. Your hip and shoulder should rise at the same rate off the floor.

Mistake 3: bracing as an afterthought
Plenty of lifters set up beautifully and then forget the most important part: the brace. A braced trunk creates internal pressure that supports your spine so your hips and legs can do the lifting. Skip it, or do it half heartedly, and the load lands on a floppy midsection. The catch is that people practise this only on heavy sets, which is exactly the wrong time to be learning it.
- Breathe into your belly, not your chest. Take a big breath low into your abdomen so your whole waist expands, front, sides and back. This is the air you are going to press against.
- Tighten your midsection all the way around. Brace as if someone is about to poke you in the stomach. You are creating pressure, not sucking your stomach in.
- Hold it through the rep. Keep the brace locked from the moment before you pull until the bar is back on the floor. Do not exhale mid rep on a heavy lift.
- Practise it light. Brace on your warm up sets too, so it is automatic by the time the bar gets heavy and a lazy brace would actually cost you.
The brace is your spine's support system and it has to be in place before movement, not built during the rep. Grooving it on light sets is what makes it reliable when the weight is heavy enough to punish a soft midsection.
Mistake 4: chasing weight faster than your form
Most deadlift back tweaks do not happen on a fresh, well braced first rep. They happen on rep eight of a set that should have stopped at five, or on a weight added because a training partner did. As you fatigue, your form quietly decays: the bar drifts, the back rounds more, the brace loosens. That is the real danger zone, and it is a mistake of programming and ego, not technique alone.
The fix is unglamorous and it works. Add weight in small jumps, a couple of kilograms every week or two rather than big leaps to hit a number. Keep a rep or two in reserve on most sets, and end a set the moment your form starts breaking down. The lifters with the healthiest backs and the biggest long term pulls are usually the ones whose training looks a little boring.
You feel a sharp or sudden pain during a pull, your form collapses under a weight, or pain lingers after training. Deadlifting through back pain is not toughness, it is how a small issue becomes a lasting one. If you already have back pain or a diagnosed condition, get individual advice before loading heavy.
Mistake 5: fearing every millimetre of back rounding
This one is a mistake in the other direction. The old advice treated any movement in the spine as a disaster, and plenty of lifters now freeze up with fear at the sight of a rounded back. Current research is more nuanced: a small amount of spinal flexion under load does not automatically cause injury, and trained lifters routinely show some lumbar rounding on heavy pulls without harm. Fear itself can even make you stiffer and less efficient.
The honest position is in the middle. The goal is a controlled, mostly neutral position you can own, not terror at any movement and not a licence to yank the bar off the floor with a folded spine. Train the flat, braced position on your working sets, keep the load matched to the control you actually have, and stop treating a slight round as a catastrophe. The dangerous version is a heavily rounded spine you cannot control under a weight you have not earned.
- Warm up the pattern, not just the muscles. A few light sets grooving your setup and brace beat straight into heavy pulling.
- Build the position with cleaner reps of five to eight before chasing heavy singles.
- Progress in small steps. A couple of kilograms every week or two adds up faster than jumps that outrun your control.
- Keep a rep in reserve on most sets and save true maximum efforts for rare, planned days.
- Support your back the rest of the week with hinges, rows and core work so your posterior chain shares the load.
