Most training programmes are lopsided. You bench, you press, you push, and the front of your shoulders gets strong and tight while the back stays weak and neglected. How to do a face pull properly

- Start with arms extended. Let the weight draw your arms straight toward the pulley, feeling a stretch across the back of your shoulders. Keep your chest tall and core braced so you are not leaning back to move the weight.
- Pull toward your face. Lead with your elbows, drawing the rope toward your forehead or eyes. Your elbows should stay high, roughly in line with your shoulders, not dropping down toward your ribs.
- Rotate as you pull. As the rope reaches your face, turn your knuckles up and back so your hands end up beside your ears, like the top of a double bicep pose. This external rotation is what brings the rotator cuff into play, and it is the part most people skip.
- Squeeze, then return slowly. Pause for a beat with your shoulder blades pulled together, then let the weight draw your arms back out under control. Do not let it yank you forward.
Turning the face pull into a heavy row by using your whole body to heave the stack, with no rotation at the end. That trains your bigger back muscles and skips the rear delts and cuff entirely. Drop the weight, keep your torso still, and add the rotation. If you are swaying to move it, it is too heavy.
Reps, sets, and where to put them
The muscles the face pull targets are small and recover quickly, so this is a high rep, low fuss exercise. You are after a strong contraction and clean rotation, not a grinding heavy effort.

Face pulls are one of the safer, more shoulder friendly exercises you can do, which is part of why they are so often recommended. Still, a few sensible limits apply.
If you already have shoulder pain, especially sharp pain or pain that wakes you at night, face pulls are not a self treatment. Rear delt and cuff strengthening is a common part of shoulder rehab, but it should be guided by a clinician who has assessed what is actually going on. Talk to a doctor or physiotherapist before loading a painful shoulder, rather than trying to train through it.
