Watch enough failed lifts and a pattern jumps out. The bench press stalls a few inches off the chest. The squat dies just above parallel. The deadlift stops dead below the knee. It is uncanny how consistent the spot is, and it is not bad luck. That region has a name, the sticking point, and once you understand why it exists you can train to break through it instead of just grinding into it and hoping.
The short version
- A sticking point is the spot in a lift where difficulty jumps sharply and heavy attempts tend to fail. It is consistent because it is built into your leverage.
- It usually sits where your mechanical advantage is worst and the strong muscles from the bottom of the lift have run out of range.
- Each big lift has a typical zone: just off the chest in the bench, just above parallel in the squat, just below the knee in the deadlift.
- You break through it by training that exact range harder, with pauses, partial reps in the weak zone, and accessory work for the muscles that own it.
- Also rule out the boring causes: speed off the bottom, technique, and simply being under-strong overall.
What a sticking point actually is
A sticking point is the position in a lift where you experience a disproportionately large jump in difficulty, and where near-maximal lifts most often fail. In a review of the sticking point across the bench press, squat, and deadlift, researchers describe it as a specific region of the range of motion where the bar slows or stalls, distinct from the rest of the lift being merely hard.
The key word is region. It is not that the whole lift is at your limit. It is that one narrow band is the true bottleneck, and everything above and below it is comparatively easy. If you can get the bar past that band, the rep usually finishes. That is why failed lifts look so similar: the bar accelerates off the start, hits the wall, and stops in the same place almost every time.
Because the sticking point is a specific, predictable region, it is a specific, trainable problem. You do not have to get generally stronger and hope. You can attack the exact range where the lift fails.
Why it lands in the same spot
Two things stack up to create the sticking point, and both come down to physics and muscle.
Your leverage gets worst
As the bar travels, the angles at your joints change, and so does how much of your muscle force actually goes into moving the weight. There is usually a position where your mechanical advantage is at its worst: the point where your body is in the least favourable position to produce force against the bar. That is where the same muscle effort produces the least useful output, so it is where a near-maximal load wins.
The strong muscles run out of range
Many lifts get powerful help at the bottom from a stretch and from especially strong muscles. Coming out of the hole in a squat, your hips and the stretch reflex give you a burst. But that help fades as you rise, and higher up the lift hands off to muscles that are working from a weaker position. The sticking point often sits right at that handover, where the early help has run out and the muscles that must finish the lift are at their least capable.
Put the two together and the picture is clear. The sticking point is where your worst leverage meets your weakest available muscles. That combination lives in a fixed part of the range, which is why it shows up in the same place rep after rep.
Where each big lift tends to stall
The exact spot varies with your build, technique, and which muscles are your weak links, but the typical zones are well known.

Notice these are all early-to-middle in the lifting phase, not the very top. Once you clear the sticking region, leverage improves and the strong finishing muscles take over, so the last part of the rep is usually the easy part. The lift is won or lost in that one band.
How to train through it
Once you know where and why a lift stalls, the fixes are direct. The theme is simple: spend more quality work in and around the weak region, and strengthen the muscles that own it.
- Pause at the sticking point. Pause reps, holding for a second or two right in the weak region, kill the momentum that carries you into it and force the muscles there to do the work. Paused bench, paused squats, and deadlift pauses below the knee are classic tools.
- Train partial reps in the weak zone. Work like board presses, pin presses, box squats to the sticking depth, or rack pulls and deficit pulls lets you overload the exact range where you fail, either by loading it heavier or by making it harder.
- Build the muscles that own the zone. Weak off the chest? Add triceps and upper-back work. Stalling above parallel? Add quad and glute strength. Deadlift dying below the knee? Strengthen the upper back and hamstrings. Accessory work targets the specific weak link.
- Drive harder into the bottom. Sometimes the fix is speed. If you are slow out of the start, you arrive at the sticking point with no momentum. Training to move the first half of the lift fast, with intent, can carry you through the wall.
Before you build a specialised programme, check the obvious: are you simply not strong enough overall yet, or is your technique drifting as the bar gets heavy? For most newer lifters, general strength work and cleaner form fix the sticking point without any special methods.
