Turn your palms away from you and it is a pull up. Turn them toward you and it is a chin up. That small change of grip sparks one of the oldest arguments in training: which one builds a bigger back? The short answer is that both hammer your lats and upper back, and the difference is smaller than the internet insists. But the difference is real, and understanding it helps you use both to your advantage instead of arguing about which is king.

People love to claim one exercise hits the lats far more than the other. The measured reality is more modest. A study by Youdas and colleagues used surface electromyography, which records how hard muscles fire, to compare a pull up and a chin up. Both strongly activated the latissimus dorsi, the big fan-shaped back muscle everyone is chasing. The clearest differences were around the edges: the chin up brought in more biceps and chest, while the pull up leaned a little more on the back of the shoulder and lower trap region.
The headline finding is not that one wins the lats. It is that both are strong lat builders, and the grip mainly changes how much help you get from your biceps and chest. If you were hoping one grip magically triples your back growth, the data does not support it.

A fair reading: if you care about your back specifically, both deliver. If you want a little extra arm and chest work baked in, the chin up gives you that. Neither is a secret weapon the other lacks.
Why chin ups usually feel easier
Most people can do more chin ups than pull ups, and there is a simple reason. With your palms facing you, your biceps are in a mechanically stronger position and contribute more to the pull. You are effectively bringing a bigger, fresher helper to the job. That extra assistance makes each rep a little easier and lets you grind out more of them.
This is genuinely useful. If you cannot do a pull up yet, chin ups are often the first strict vertical pull people manage, which makes them a great on-ramp. You get real back and arm work while building toward the harder overhand version. There is no shame in starting with the grip that lets you train hardest.
If chin ups let you do clean, full-range reps while pull ups still have you kipping and struggling, do the chin ups. More quality reps of a full movement build more muscle than a handful of ugly ones. You can add the pull up as your strength climbs.
So which builds a bigger back?
Here is the honest answer nobody selling a program wants to give: for building your back, it barely matters, and both work superbly. Muscle grows in response to hard, progressive work through a good range of motion, and both the pull up and the chin up deliver that to your lats and upper back. The grip nudges the arm and chest contribution, but the back is doing serious work either way.
What actually builds a bigger back is showing up, adding reps and load over time, using a full range from a dead hang to your chest near the bar, and doing enough total pulling volume across your week. Reviews of training volume consistently find that how much quality work you do drives growth. Whether that work is pull ups, chin ups, or a mix is a detail next to consistency.
