There is a quiet reason a lot of lifts stall, and it has nothing to do with genetics or effort. It is arithmetic. The smallest plates most gyms stock are 2.5 kilograms, so the smallest jump you can make on a barbell is 5 kilograms, one plate per side. On a squat that is a reasonable step. On an overhead press, it can be a huge leap that no amount of trying will let you make cleanly. The fix is almost embarrassingly simple: smaller plates. Microloading is how you keep adding weight when the standard jumps have become too big to take.
The short version
- The smallest jump in most gyms is 5 kilograms on the bar, which is a 2.5 kilogram plate on each side. On small lifts that is often too much.
- Microloading uses fractional plates, often as small as **0.25 kilograms** each, so you can add as little as half a kilo to the bar.
- It matters most on upper-body and single-joint lifts like the overhead press and curls, where a 5 kilogram jump can be a 10 percent increase or more.
- A small jump you can recover from and repeat keeps your progression streak alive. A big jump you cannot make just stalls you.

The problem microloading solves
Progressive overload works when the demand rises a little faster than your comfort but slower than your ability to recover. Miss that window on the heavy side and you stall. The trouble is that standard equipment forces a minimum jump that can be far bigger than the window allows, especially on smaller lifts.
Think about what a 5 kilogram increase means as a percentage. On a 120 kilogram deadlift, 5 kilograms is about 4 percent, a gentle nudge. On a 30 kilogram overhead press, that same 5 kilograms is nearly 17 percent, an enormous leap to ask your body to make in one session. No wonder the press is the lift people stall on first. The weight did not get too heavy for your muscles. The jump got too big for the arithmetic.
Your body cares about the percentage jump, not the round number on the plate. Microloading lets you keep every jump a small percentage, which is exactly what keeps a progression going.
What fractional plates actually are
Fractional plates, sometimes called microplates or change plates, are simply very light plates that fit a standard barbell sleeve. They usually come in a small set, and putting a matched pair on the bar lets you add tiny, precise amounts.

A typical starter set might include pairs of 0.25, 0.5, and 1.25 kilogram plates. That gives you the ability to add anything from half a kilo upward in small, precise steps. They are inexpensive, and because they are small, a set lives happily in a gym bag so you always have them even at a gym that does not stock them.
When microloading is worth it, and when it is not
Microloading is a tool, not a religion. It shines in some places and is pointless in others. Reaching for it on the right lifts is what makes it valuable.
Where it helps most
- The overhead press. The lift people stall on soonest, because it is light and hard to add to. Half-kilo jumps can keep it moving for months.
- Isolation and arm work. Curls, lateral raises, and triceps work involve small muscles and light weights where a 5 kilogram jump is absurd.
- Any lift near a plateau. When you have stalled on a bigger jump, dropping to microloads is often enough to start the streak again.
- Advanced lifters generally. The stronger and more experienced you are, the slower you adapt, so smaller and less frequent jumps become the norm.
Where it does not matter much
On big lower-body lifts for a beginner, standard 5 kilogram jumps are usually fine and adapting to them is part of early progress. A new lifter squatting light can often add the standard amount for a while before microloads become useful. Save the fractional plates for the moment the normal jump starts causing missed reps, rather than treating them as mandatory from day one.
Reach for microplates the first time a standard jump makes you miss reps you should have made. That is the signal your body needs a smaller step, not more grit.
How to microload in practice
- Pair microloading with a rep range. Climb your reps to the top of a range at a given weight, then add the smallest microload that keeps the jump sensible, and rebuild your reps. Small load steps and rep progress work beautifully together.
- Match the plate to the lift. Use half-kilo total jumps on the overhead press and arm work, and a kilo or two and a half on bench, row, and other mid-size lifts. Keep big lower-body lifts on larger jumps until they stall.
- Always load in matched pairs. One plate per side keeps the bar balanced. Adding a single small plate to one side makes the lift lopsided and can groove a bad pattern.
- Do not chase perfection. You do not need to add weight every single session. Some weeks you add a rep, some a microload, some you hold and recover. The trend over weeks is what counts.
- Keep logging. Half-kilo jumps are easy to lose track of. Write down the exact weight each session so you can prove the slow, steady climb is real.
None of this changes the principle behind training. Progress still comes from asking your body to do slightly more than it is used to, then recovering. Microloading just makes slightly more small enough to actually be slight, which on the lifts that matter is often the whole difference between a stall and a streak.
