Somewhere along the way, 40/30/30 became the number everyone quotes: 40 percent of calories from carbohydrate, 30 percent from protein, 30 percent from fat. It sounds precise enough to be scientific, which is exactly why it spread. The honest answer to whether it is best is not very satisfying: it is fine, but it is not magic, and it is not right for everyone. The percentages matter much less than people think. A precise-sounding ratio feels like a lever you can pull, and pulling it is easier than the boring work of controlling total calories and protein week after week. But the trials keep landing in the same place. When you strip away the marketing, the ratio is a distribution choice on top of the two things that actually move the needle. - Set a minimum fat floor. Keep fat at roughly 0.6 to 1 gram per kilogram of body weight so hormones and vitamin absorption are covered. Below that, some people feel worse.
- Fill the rest with carbs. Whatever calories remain after protein and fat go to carbohydrate. If you train hard, more carbs help performance. If you prefer fewer, that is fine too.
