Stand still anywhere you have to wait, a station platform, a hospital corridor, an office break room, the foyer of a leisure centre, and there will usually be a lit box a few steps away offering crisps, chocolate, and fizzy drinks. The vending machine is so ordinary that it has become invisible. But its spread was not inevitable, and its placement is not random. Once a machine could sit unattended in any corridor and turn a profit, there was no building it would not spread to. Offices, hospitals, schools, gyms, and transport hubs all became host sites.
A vending machine is a shop that needs no staff, no opening hours, and almost no floor space. Its entire advantage is being closer to you than any real shop. That advantage is also exactly why it changes your eating.
Why nearness beats intention
The reason vending machines work so well is not clever marketing on the front panel. It is location. A large body of research on the food environment shows that how close and how easy a food is to reach strongly influences whether people select and eat it. A 2019 review of studies that changed the availability or proximity of food found that when tempting products were made less available or moved further away, people chose and consumed less of them.
Put simply, the shorter the distance between a person and a snack, the more of that snack gets eaten. A machine in your own corridor is passed many times a day, and each pass is a small prompt. You do not need to want a chocolate bar in the morning to buy one by mid-afternoon, you just need to keep walking past it while tired, bored, or a little hungry. The decision feels spontaneous, but the environment loaded the dice.
If proximity reliably moves the behaviour of large groups in controlled studies, then leaning on personal willpower to resist a machine you pass ten times a day is fighting the odds. The honest response is to change the setup, not to blame yourself for the outcome.
What is actually in the machine
The other half of the problem is the stock. Vending machines are filled almost entirely with ultra-processed foods and sugar-sweetened drinks, because those are the products built to survive months in a coil and sell on impulse. These are also, unfortunately, among the easiest foods to overeat. A carefully controlled 2019 trial found people ate about 500 more calories a day on an ultra-processed diet than a minimally processed one, even when the two were matched for sugar, fat, and protein.
So the machine is not simply offering food, it is offering the specific category of food most likely to push your intake up. And because larger packages drive higher consumption, the trend toward bigger bars and bottles makes each purchase count for more. A review of portion and package sizes estimated that if the effect of larger sizes carried across the whole diet, it could shift average daily energy intake by roughly 12 to 16 percent.

How to beat a machine you cannot avoid
Since the machine's power is proximity, the counter-move is to make your better option even closer and to remove the moment of decision. Willpower at the machine is the weakest possible defence, because that is exactly the moment the environment is designed to win. Decide earlier, when you are not standing in front of the coils.
- Carry a default snack. Keep fruit, nuts, roasted chickpeas, or a yoghurt in your bag or desk. If your own snack is nearer than the machine, proximity works for you instead of against you.
- Break the walk-past loop. Take a route that does not pass the machine, or fill your water bottle somewhere else. Fewer passes means fewer prompts.
- Decide before you are hungry. Choose your afternoon snack at lunch, when you are full and thinking clearly, not at 3pm when the machine looks like the answer.
- If you use it, buy the smaller size. Package size drives how much you eat, so the small bag genuinely means less consumed, not just less spent.
You will not win a willpower contest against a lit box in your own corridor. Bring your own snack so the nearest food is the one you actually chose.
