Most people either ignore their calves or blast a few fast, bouncy standing raises and call it done. The seated calf raise is the piece they are missing. It is not just a sitting-down version of the standing raise, it trains a different muscle. By bending your knee, you take the bigger, more visible calf muscle out of the movement and put the load on the deeper one underneath, the one that does most of your calf work when you walk and stand. Done properly, with a full stretch, a real squeeze, and slow reps, it fills out the lower part of your calf that standing raises leave behind. And the technique is simple once you understand what the bent knee is actually for.
The short version
- The seated calf raise trains the soleus, the deep calf muscle the standing raise mostly skips.
- Bending your knee is the whole point: it shortens the big outer calf muscle so the soleus underneath takes over.
- Get a full stretch at the bottom by letting your heels sink below the platform, then rise all the way up onto your toes.

Your calf is two muscles, not one
The bulge you see on the back of your lower leg is mostly the gastrocnemius, the muscle with two visible heads. Underneath it sits a broader, flatter muscle called the soleus. Together they run down into the Achilles tendon and point your foot. The key difference between them is where they attach: the gastrocnemius crosses both your knee and your ankle, while the soleus crosses only the ankle.
That one difference is why the seated calf raise exists. When your knee is bent, the gastrocnemius is put into a slack, shortened position where it cannot pull hard, so it largely drops out of the movement. The soleus, which does not cross the knee, is unaffected and takes over the work. Electromyography studies, which measure muscle activity, show gastrocnemius activation dropping when the knee is bent compared with a straight leg, so it does less of the work in the seated position. So the bent knee is not laziness, it is the mechanism that pulls the gastrocnemius out and leaves the soleus to drive the movement.
The soleus does a huge share of your everyday standing and walking, and it fills out the lower and side of your calf. Standing raises with a straight leg emphasise the gastrocnemius, so without seated raises that lower calf is undertrained.
Setting up the machine
- Sit and place the balls of your feet on the platform. Put the front of your feet on the edge of the platform with your heels hanging off, so your ankles can move through a full range.
- Set the knee pad snug on your lower thighs. Adjust the pad so it sits just above your knees, close to the thigh, holding the weight without pinching.
- Bend your knees to about a right angle. This is the bent-knee position that shifts the work onto the soleus. Do not straighten your legs during the set.
- Release the safety and take the load. Push up onto your toes to lift the weight, then move the safety catch out of the way so you are holding it.
The rep: stretch, squeeze, slow
The seated calf raise is a small movement, which makes it tempting to rush and bounce. Resist that. The whole value is in a full range of motion done under control.
- Stretch fully at the bottom. Let your heels sink down below the level of the platform until you feel a real stretch through your calf and Achilles. Do not cut this short.
- Rise all the way up. Push through the balls of your feet and lift your heels as high as they will go, right up onto your toes, and pause for a moment at the top.
- Squeeze the top. Hold that fully contracted position for a beat so the muscle actually does the work rather than the tendon and momentum.
- Lower slowly. Come down under control over a couple of seconds rather than dropping, then flow straight into the next stretch.
Fast, bouncy reps use the tendon like a spring and let momentum do the work, so the muscle barely gets loaded. Slow the reps right down, pause at the stretch and the squeeze, and you will feel the difference immediately with far less weight.

Reps, sets, and pairing
Calves tend to respond well to a fair amount of work, and because the soleus is built for endurance, higher reps often feel most productive here. A good starting range is 3 to 4 sets of 12 to 20 reps, taken close to the point where another clean, full rep would be hard, two or three times a week.
Pair the seated calf raise with a standing calf raise to cover both muscles: standing with a straighter leg for the gastrocnemius, seated with a bent knee for the soleus. Between them you train the whole calf. Progress the way you would any lift, adding a little weight or a rep over time, but never at the cost of your range of motion. Full reps you slowly overload for months are what finally grow stubborn calves.
