Your one-rep max, the heaviest weight you can lift once, is the cleanest single measure of maximal strength. It is also a test that costs you something: a hard, fatiguing, slightly risky effort that eats into the training that actually makes you stronger. So the honest question is not whether to test it, but how rarely you can get away with, and still know exactly where you stand.
The short version
- For most people, a true one-repetition maximum (1RM) is worth testing only every few months, or at the end of a training block, not every week.
- Testing is a good measurement but a poor training stimulus. Max too often and you spend your energy on the test instead of the training.

Why testing your max has a real cost
A one-rep max attempt is not free. To lift a true maximum you have to be fresh, warmed up thoroughly, and psychologically ready. The attempt itself is deeply fatiguing to the nervous system, and the days around it are usually spent recovering rather than progressing. Do this often and you carve chunks out of your actual training.
There is a subtler cost too. Maximal singles are a poor tool for building strength compared with the work you would otherwise do. Getting stronger comes from accumulating quality sets over weeks. A near-limit single teaches your nervous system a little, but a session built around one heavy attempt gives you far less useful training than a session of solid working sets. In other words, testing your max is measurement, not training, and confusing the two slows you down.
Treating a weekly max attempt as a workout. Chasing a top single every week burns your recovery, raises injury risk, and often leaves you weaker on the days that matter, because you are always testing and never building.
So how often is it actually worth it?
For most people who lift to get stronger, a true 1RM test is worth doing only occasionally: roughly every 8 to 16 weeks, usually at the end of a training block or before deliberately changing your programme. That is often enough to confirm real progress and reset your working weights, and rare enough that it does not eat your training.
Who should test more, and who should test less?

Notice the beginner row. If you are new, you almost never need to test a true max. Your lifts are climbing so fast that the weight you handled last week is already old news. Adding load week to week is your progress report.
You can know your max without lifting it
Here is the part that lets most people skip the risk entirely. You can estimate your one-rep max accurately from a hard set of a few reps. If you know that you can do 5 solid reps at a given weight, prediction equations translate that into a close estimate of your single. Research on estimating 1RM from submaximal efforts reports a strong overall relationship, with the estimate most accurate when the test set is genuinely close to failure and in a low rep range.
The practical rule: the fewer reps in your test set, the more accurate the estimate. A hard set of 3 to 5 reps predicts your max far better than a set of 15. So a heavy triple you were going to do anyway quietly doubles as a strength check, with none of the cost of a true single.
Once every few weeks, take one main lift to a hard set of 3 to 5 reps, stopping about one rep short of failure. Log the weight and reps. Watching that number climb tells you your max is climbing too, without a single maximal attempt.
When you do test, how to do it well
A true 1RM test is reliable and, done properly, safe for most people. A systematic review of 1RM testing found good to excellent test-retest reliability across ages and experience levels, including older adults, and concluded the test is generally safe for most groups when standard precautions are followed. The risk comes from ego and poor setup, not from the test itself.
- Be fresh. Test on a day with little prior fatigue, ideally after a lighter week. A max attempt on tired legs measures your fatigue, not your strength.
- Warm up in steps. Ramp up over several sets of decreasing reps toward your attempt. Warm-ups prime your nervous system and are part of why the test is reliable.
- Use safety measures. A competent spotter for the bench, safety pins in a rack for the squat, and a lift you can bail from safely. Never test a true max alone on a lift you cannot escape.
- Stop when form breaks. A max lifted with breaking technique is not a real max, it is a near miss with your health. If the bar slows to a crawl and your position falls apart, that rep counts as the ceiling for today.
