Most programs are written weeks in advance and assume you will feel exactly the same at every session. Real life does not cooperate. You sleep badly, you skip a meal, you have a stressful week, and suddenly the weight that flew up last Tuesday feels bolted to the floor. A good coach does not ignore that. They read how the lift actually went and adjust what you do next. This idea, adjusting the plan to the body that showed up, is called autoregulation, and it is exactly the kind of judgement an app can automate well.

The problem with a plan written weeks in advance

A traditional strength program assigns loads ahead of time, often as a percentage of your one-rep max. It might say squat 100 kilograms for five reps this week, 105 next week, and so on. That is tidy on paper. The trouble is that your capacity is not fixed. It swings day to day with your sleep, food, stress, and how recovered you are from the last session.

So the prescribed weight ends up wrong in two directions. On a good day, the target is too easy and you leave progress on the table. On a bad day, the same target becomes a grind that buries you in fatigue and raises your injury risk for no extra benefit. A fixed plan cannot tell the difference between those days. A coach can, and so can an app that watches the right signals.

Reps in reserve is the most accessible. If you finished a set of five and felt you had three good reps left, that set was not maximal, and next time you can add load. Rating of perceived exertion (RPE) puts a number on effort, often on a scale where a top score means no reps left and a lower score means several in the tank. Bar speed is the most objective: as a set gets closer to failure, the weight moves slower, and tracking that slowdown reveals fatigue you might not consciously feel.

Why RPE and reps in reserve pair well

They are two views of the same thing. An RPE of 8 usually means about two reps in reserve. Rating the effort and estimating the reps left both point at the same question: how close to your limit was that set? Answer it honestly and you can steer the load.

Does adjusting loads actually work better?

It is a fair question, because tidy fixed percentages have their own appeal. The research is encouraging. When lifters trained using effort ratings to set their loads instead of fixed percentages, they gained at least as much strength, and the effort-based group tended to hold a small advantage, likely because the load matched their true capacity each day rather than a stale estimate.

Broader reviews reach a similar verdict. Autoregulated load prescription produces strength gains that match or modestly exceed standardised loading. The mechanism is intuitive: on strong days you get the harder session you can handle, and on weak days you avoid grinding a load that would only cost you recovery. Over months, that steadier signal adds up.

An honest caveat

Autoregulation is not magic, and the edge over a good fixed plan is modest, not enormous. Its biggest real-world value is durability: it keeps you progressing through the bad weeks that derail rigid programs, and it lowers the odds of a needless grind on a day your body was not ready.

How an AI coach automates the judgement

Reading these signals by hand is doable but demanding. You have to log every set, remember how each one felt, spot trends across weeks, and translate all of it into next week's numbers. Most people simply do not, so the theory never turns into adjusted loads. This is exactly the gap software fills well, because it does the boring, consistent tracking that human memory skips.

  1. It logs every set with its effort. Weight, reps, and how hard the set felt or how many you had left, captured at the moment, not reconstructed from memory days later.
  2. It watches the trend, not one session. A single hard day is noise. A pattern of the same load feeling harder across sessions is signal, and software catches the pattern where you would miss it.
  3. It proposes the next load. If your recent sets came in easier than targeted, it nudges the weight up. If they are creeping toward maximal effort, it holds or backs off to protect recovery.
  4. It schedules the easier weeks. When fatigue markers pile up, it can recommend a lighter week before you dig a hole, rather than after you are already stuck.

Crucially, an app can also just ask you. A quick check-in about your sleep, soreness, and how the warm-up felt gives it context a static spreadsheet never has. The point is not to replace your judgement but to remember everything, spot the trend, and hand you a sensible number so you can get on with the lift.

How to autoregulate yourself, even without an app

You do not need software to start. The principles work with a notebook and a little honesty. Here is a simple way to autoregulate a main lift by hand.

  1. Set a target effort, not just a weight. For example, work up to a set of five that leaves about two reps in reserve, rather than a fixed weight decided in advance.
  2. Judge the top set honestly. If those five reps had four in the tank, the weight was too light. If you barely made it, it was too heavy for the target. Adjust next time accordingly.
  3. Log the effort, not just the numbers. Write down how the set felt alongside the weight and reps. That note is what lets you compare this week to last honestly.
  4. Let bad days be lighter. On a flat day, hit the target effort at a lower weight and move on. You still trained. You just did not dig a hole you would pay for next week.

Stop asking only what weight the plan says. Start asking what effort today deserves. That one change, whether you track it in your head, a notebook, or an app, is the whole of autoregulation.
