People argue about hammer curls versus bicep curls as if you have to pick a winner. You do not. They are not competitors, they are two tools for the same job, and the smartest lifters use both. The difference comes down to one thing: which way your palm faces. That single change of grip shifts the load between three different muscles in your upper arm and forearm, and understanding it turns a vague choice into a deliberate one. If you want a fuller, thicker arm rather than just a taller biceps peak, this is worth ten minutes.

The muscles: three players, not one

Underneath it sits the brachialis, a flat muscle that only bends the elbow. Muscle-activity studies using electromyography, which measures the electrical signal a muscle produces as it works, consistently show that a neutral grip drives more of the load into the brachialis and brachioradialis, while a supinated palm-up grip puts the biceps in its strongest, most involved position.
The brachialis lies beneath the biceps. When it grows, it physically pushes the biceps upward, making your arm look bigger from the side and adding width to the whole upper arm. Chasing only the biceps peak while ignoring the brachialis is why a lot of arms look flat rather than full.
The standard bicep curl
A standard curl is done with a supinated grip, palms facing up, whether you use dumbbells, a barbell, or a cable. Because the biceps both bends the elbow and turns the palm up, this grip lets you finish the movement with a hard supination and squeeze, recruiting the biceps as fully as possible.
This is the exercise for the biceps itself, including the peak that shows when you flex. If your goal is that classic bulge on the top of the arm, palm-up curls are the main tool. The catch is that a heavy straight barbell forces your wrists into a fixed supinated position, which some people find hard on the wrist and elbow. An EZ bar with its angled grips, or dumbbells that let each wrist rotate freely, usually solves that.
The single most common way people waste a standard curl is skipping the supination. Turn your palm up hard at the top, as if pouring something out of your little finger toward your shoulder, and squeeze. That final rotation is a big part of what makes a curl a biceps exercise rather than just an elbow bend.
The hammer curl
A hammer curl is done with a neutral grip, palms facing each other, holding the dumbbells as if they were hammers. Because the forearm never supinates, the biceps loses some of its leverage, and the brachialis and brachioradialis step forward to take more of the load.
This does two useful things. It builds the brachialis, which thickens the whole arm as described above, and it hits the brachioradialis, the large forearm muscle that runs along the thumb side of your lower arm. That is why hammer curls tend to be the go-to for anyone who wants forearms to match their upper arms rather than lagging behind.
There is a practical bonus. The neutral grip is a mechanically strong and joint-friendly position, so most people can hammer curl a little more weight than they can supinated curl, and with less wrist strain. If heavy palm-up curls bother your wrists, hammer curls often let you keep loading the arm hard without the same irritation.
Which should you do, and when
The honest answer is both, because they train different muscles. But here is how to think about it depending on what you are after.

A simple way to run both without overthinking it: use one as your main curl for a training block and the other as a second, lighter movement. For example, standard dumbbell curls for your heavier working sets, then hammer curls for a couple of controlled sets afterward. Swap the emphasis every few weeks. Both respond well to the same rules as any curl, roughly 8 to 15 reps, strict form, a full stretch at the bottom, and no swinging.
Grip choice is the fine-tuning. It means nothing if you swing the weight up with your back and shoulders. Whether you hammer curl or supinate, keep your upper arms still, control the lowering phase, and pick a weight you can actually curl. A sloppy hammer curl and a sloppy standard curl are equally useless.
