Electrolytes have gone from a word on the back of a sports drink to a wellness product in their own right, sold as sachets, tablets, and powders that promise energy, focus, and better hydration. The biology is real: your body genuinely needs these minerals, and losing too many during heavy sweating can hurt performance. But for most people on most days, the food you already eat covers your needs comfortably. The useful question is not whether electrolytes matter, but when topping them up actually changes anything.

That charge is what lets your nerves fire, your muscles contract, and your body hold fluid in the right places. Without them, a heartbeat and a bicep curl would both be impossible, which is why the body regulates them within tight limits.
Because they are so important, your kidneys and hormones work constantly to keep electrolyte levels steady, pulling more from food when you are low and dumping the excess in urine when you are high. This is the part the marketing tends to skip: for a healthy person eating normally, that system does the balancing for you. You do not need to manually "replenish" electrolytes any more than you need to manually replenish your blood sugar between meals.

Do you need to supplement them?
For everyday life, the honest answer is usually no. A varied diet with vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, beans, nuts, and some salt already supplies the electrolytes your body needs each day. The idea that most people walk around electrolyte-depleted, foggy and underpowered, is a marketing story more than a physiological one. If you eat food, you are getting electrolytes.
This holds for typical gym sessions too. A 45 to 60 minute workout in an air-conditioned gym does not drain your electrolytes to any meaningful degree. Plain water, plus your next normal meal, restores anything you lost. Reaching for a sachet after a moderate session is not harmful, it is just unnecessary, and it can add sugar and calories you did not plan for.
The confusion often comes from how the products are framed. Symptoms like tiredness, poor focus, or a mild headache get pinned on "low electrolytes", when in a healthy person eating normally they far more often come from poor sleep, skipped meals, stress, or plain dehydration that water alone fixes. A sachet may feel like it helped, but that is usually the fluid, the flavour, and the small break, not a mineral deficit being corrected. Save the electrolyte product for the days your body has genuinely lost a lot through sweat.
Electrolytes are not an animal-foods story. Potatoes, beans, lentils, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, wholegrains, tofu, and fortified plant milks are rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium, and salt supplies sodium. A plant-based plate covers electrolytes as easily as any other.
When electrolytes genuinely matter
There are real situations where topping up is smart rather than superfluous. The common thread is heavy fluid and salt loss over an extended period, which food and water alone may not keep pace with in the moment.
- Long, hot, sweaty sessions, roughly beyond 60 to 90 minutes of continuous hard effort, especially in heat, where a carbohydrate-electrolyte drink helps.
- Very heavy sweaters, people who finish a session with white salt marks on their kit, who lose more sodium than average.
- Endurance events lasting several hours, where replacing sodium alongside fluid reduces the risk of diluting your blood sodium.
- Illness with a lot of vomiting or diarrhoea, where an oral rehydration solution replaces both fluid and salts (follow medical guidance).
- Working or training hard in hot climates day after day, where cumulative losses add up.
Notice what dominates this list: sodium. It is the electrolyte you lose most in sweat, which is exactly why proper sports and rehydration products are built around it. Magnesium and potassium get most of the marketing glow, but sodium is the one that does the heavy lifting when you are sweating hard for a long time.
Why water alone is not always the answer
Here is the counterintuitive part. During very long efforts, drinking large amounts of plain water can actually be a problem. If you sweat out a lot of sodium and replace it with water only, your blood sodium can fall too low, a condition called exercise-associated hyponatremia. In serious cases it is dangerous. The consensus from sports medicine experts is that this is driven mainly by overdrinking plain fluid, and that sodium-containing drinks help in the setting of long, salty sweat losses.
So the electrolyte question flips depending on the situation. For a normal day or a short workout, water and food are all you need. For hours of hard sweating, replacing sodium alongside fluid, rather than pouring in plain water, is the safer and smarter approach.
During long endurance efforts, more plain water is not automatically better. Match fluid to thirst and include sodium so you do not dilute your blood. This is one place a proper electrolyte drink genuinely helps.
