The deadlift is the great strength ceiling. It moves more weight than any other lift, which makes a stall on it feel especially final. It also generates more fatigue than anything else you do, which means it stalls for its own particular reasons. A stuck deadlift is almost never a mystery. It is a recovery problem, a setup leak, a specific sticking point, or a progression that stopped fitting you. This walks through each cause and exactly how to fix it.

When a deadlift is genuinely stuck
One missed pull is not a plateau. Because the deadlift is so fatiguing, a single grim session usually just means you came in tired, underfed, or under-recovered from the last heavy pull. A true deadlift plateau is three to four weeks with no progress at all: no more weight, no more reps, no cleaner reps at the same load, over honest effort.
Pace matters here more than on any other lift. The deadlift often adds weight fast at first because it moves so much load, then slows sharply. What feels like a wall may just be the point where deadlift progress naturally becomes small and monthly rather than weekly. If the bar is still creeping up, even slowly, you are not stuck. You are in the normal grind.
Review your last four deadlift sessions. If any beat a previous one on weight, reps, or clean reps at the same load, keep going. If none did, work through the causes below.
Cause 1: Fatigue is burying your strength
The deadlift is the most fatiguing lift in the gym. It moves the heaviest loads through the biggest muscles, and it takes the longest to recover from. This is the number one reason deadlifts stall: people pull heavy too often and never let fatigue drain, so their true strength stays hidden under a pile of tiredness. Poor sleep makes it worse, and reviews of the evidence tie inadequate sleep to reduced maximal strength, which is exactly what a heavy pull needs.
- Frequency: most people do not need to pull heavy more than once or twice a week. More than that on a fatiguing lift often backfires.
- Sleep: seven to nine consistent hours. Heavy pulling repays recovery more than lighter work does.
- Protein: around 1.6 grams per kilogram of bodyweight per day. Meat, eggs, and dairy work, and so do lentils, beans, tofu, tempeh, edamame, and soy milk.
- Calories: adding to your heaviest lift is hard in a steep deficit. Maintenance or a slight surplus makes it far easier.
If your deadlift feels immovable, the first suspect is fatigue, not weakness. Pull heavy less often, recover harder, and the bar frequently moves again without any program overhaul.
Cause 2: A setup or hinge leak
The deadlift is decided before the bar leaves the floor. A sloppy setup or a hip hinge that turns into a squat or a back-rounding yank wastes force and caps your pull below your real strength. Fix the position and you often find weight you already had.
- Set your stance and bar position. The bar should sit over your midfoot before you bend down, not out over your toes. A consistent starting position is a consistent pull.
- Find your setup the same way every time. Hips at a repeatable height, shoulders just in front of the bar, lats engaged. Drifting setups make every rep a fresh experiment.
- Hinge, do not squat the bar up. Push your hips back and keep your shins close to vertical at the start. The deadlift is a hip hinge, and treating it like a squat robs your strongest muscles.
- Brace and pull the slack out. Take a big breath, brace hard, and tension the bar against the plates before you drive. A hard brace protects your back and transmits force.
- Keep the bar against your body. Drag it up your shins and thighs. A bar that drifts away turns your lower back into the weak link and kills the lift.
Record from the side. A bar starting over your toes, hips bouncing up and down before the pull, or the bar drifting away from your legs are all obvious on video and cost you real kilos.
Cause 3: Attack your sticking point
Every stuck deadlift has a spot where it dies. Where the bar stalls tells you which link in the chain is failing, and that turns a vague plateau into a specific, trainable problem.

Pick one or two accessories that target your sticking point and run them for a block of several weeks. Deficit deadlifts overload the bottom for people who fail off the floor. Rack pulls and block pulls strengthen a weak lockout. And if your grip is the first thing to fail, it is worth training on its own, because a lift you cannot hold is a lift you cannot finish. A sumo stance is also worth trying if your leverages suit it, since the shorter range and more upright torso break the plateau for some pullers.
Cause 4: Progress the way a strong lifter does
Early on you can add 5 to 10 kilograms to the deadlift most weeks because it moves so much load and you are far from your ceiling. Later, those jumps get impossible to repeat, you miss reps, and you stall. The deadlift did not betray you. You simply outgrew the beginner method of adding weight every session.
Switch to double progression. Choose a rep range, say three to five or four to six for heavy pulling. Hold the weight and add reps until you own the top of the range, then add the smallest jump you can and reset to the bottom. Adding reps is genuine progress: controlled research shows progressing reps builds muscle about as well as progressing load, so a stuck weight is not a stuck lift.
- Pick a rep range you can build within, for example 3 to 5 or 4 to 6.
- Keep the weight and chase reps until you hit the top of the range on all working sets.
- Add a modest jump, often 2.5 to 5 kilograms total, and restart at the bottom of the range.
- Because the deadlift is so fatiguing, resist the urge to add extra heavy sets. Add work in small, tested doses.
More sets can build muscle, but the deadlift's fatigue cost means piling on heavy volume often stalls you faster. Get more from lighter variations and back-off sets rather than more max-effort pulls.
Cause 5: Deload to let your strength surface
Because the deadlift generates the most fatigue of any lift, it hides your true strength more than any other. The bar feels bolted down not because you are weak but because you are buried under weeks of accumulated fatigue. The counterintuitive fix is to back off on purpose and let that fatigue drain.
A deload week cuts your deadlift volume or intensity by roughly 40 to 60 percent for one week while keeping the movement in. The deadlift often responds to a deload more dramatically than any other lift, precisely because it carries the most hidden fatigue. Alternatively, a planned reset drops your working weight by 10 to 15 percent and rebuilds over a few weeks with crisp, submaximal pulls and a tighter setup. Both work because strength is what remains when fatigue lifts, and on the deadlift there is more fatigue to lift than anywhere else.
