The barbell hip thrust and the barbell glute bridge look like cousins, and they are. You put a loaded bar across your hips and extend them against it. Being set up on a bench also makes it far easier to get under a heavy bar and to keep adding weight, because you are not fighting to bridge a loaded barbell straight up off the floor from a dead stop.

What the research actually shows
This comparison gets treated as settled science more than it deserves. The honest picture is smaller than the arguments around it. A 2022 study in Sports Biomechanics put the two lifts head to head and measured muscle activity with surface electromyography, the method that reads the electrical signal a working muscle gives off.
The finding surprised a lot of people. The barbell glute bridge produced significantly greater gluteus maximus activation than the hip thrust, while the hip thrust produced more activation in the vastus lateralis, one of the quadriceps. So the shorter range lift lit up the glutes more in that snapshot, and the longer range lift pulled in more quad.
A single session of electromyography tells you how loudly a muscle fires on the day, not how much it grows over months. Muscle size is driven by training a muscle hard through a good range and adding load over time. So do not read one activation study as proof that the bridge builds bigger glutes.
This is where the hip thrust earns its reputation back. Because it is so easy to load and keep loading, it is one of the simplest lifts to apply progressive overload to, the steady addition of weight or reps that actually drives growth. The hip thrust's longer range is not just a talking point. Training a muscle through a fuller range, especially through the stretched portion, tends to be at least as good as, and often better than, a short range for building muscle. A 2021 meta-analysis in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports found full range training produced greater lower body muscle growth than partial range training across the studies it pooled.
That does not mean the bridge is useless. It means that if you had to bet on one to build the glutes over a year, the lift with more range and easier loading is the safer bet. The bridge remains a genuinely good exercise, just with a shorter runway.
How to choose, and how to do each one well
For most people the answer is not one or the other forever. Use the hip thrust as your main loaded glute lift and keep the glute bridge in your back pocket for busy gyms, home sessions, or as a finisher. Whichever you pick, the same rules make it work.
- Set your feet so shins are vertical at the top. At full hip extension your knees should sit roughly over your ankles, not far in front. Walk your feet in or out until it lines up.
- Tuck your chin and ribs down. Look toward your knees rather than the ceiling and keep your ribs down. This stops you arching your lower back and cranking the movement through your spine instead of your hips.
- Drive through your heels and squeeze at the top. Push the floor away through your heels, finish with hips fully straight, and hold a hard glute squeeze for a beat before lowering under control.
- Own a full, controlled range. On the thrust, let your hips sink low off the bench and drive high. On the bridge, use the range the floor gives you. Do not bounce.
- Add load slowly and honestly. Use a bar pad, add weight only when your reps stay clean, and chase steady progression rather than a heroic single that wrecks your form.
Both build glutes. The hip thrust wins on range and how far you can load it, so make it your main lift. Keep the glute bridge as the simple, bench free option that still does the job on the days the thrust is not practical.
