How to Respond to Online Harassment

Take Immediate Action

When you experience online harassment, your first instinct may be to respond, argue, or defend yourself. Resist that urge. Engaging with the harasser often gives them exactly what they want: your attention and emotional energy. Instead, focus on protecting yourself and building a record of what has happened.

Step 1: Document Everything

Before you block, mute, or report anyone, capture evidence. This is critical if the situation escalates or you decide to involve law enforcement later. Effective documentation includes:

  • Screenshots: Capture every abusive message, comment, or post. Make sure the screenshot includes the harasser's username, the date and time, and the platform URL.
  • Save URLs: Copy the direct link to each piece of harassing content. Social media posts and comments can be deleted, so preserving the URL alongside your screenshot creates a stronger evidence trail.
  • Keep a log: Maintain a simple written record noting dates, times, what was said or done, and any witnesses (other users who saw the content).
  • Do not alter evidence: Never edit screenshots or selectively capture only part of a conversation. Present the full, unedited record.

Step 2: Block and Mute

Once you have documented the harassment, use the platform's blocking and muting features. On KF.Social, you can block any user from their profile page or directly from their messages. Blocking prevents them from viewing your profile, sending you messages, or interacting with your content. Muting is a softer option that simply hides their content from your feed without alerting them.

Step 3: Report to the Platform

Every reputable platform has a reporting mechanism. On KF.Social, use the "Report" button on the user's profile or on the specific piece of content. When filing a report, be specific about what happened and, if possible, reference your documented evidence. Platform moderation teams review these reports and can take action including content removal, account suspension, or permanent bans.

Step 4: Know When It Becomes Criminal

In the United Kingdom, online harassment can cross into criminal territory. Under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, a course of conduct that causes alarm or distress is a criminal offence. The Malicious Communications Act 1988 and the Communications Act 2003 also cover threatening, abusive, or grossly offensive messages sent electronically. Specific behaviours that may constitute crimes include:

  • Threats of violence or death threats.
  • Persistent contact after being asked to stop.
  • Sharing intimate images without consent (covered under the Criminal Justice and Courts Act 2015).
  • Stalking behaviour, including monitoring your online activity.
  • Incitement of others to harass you.

If you believe you are experiencing criminal harassment, report it to the police. In England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, you can also report to Action Fraud, the UK's national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime.

Step 5: Seek Support

Harassment takes a toll on your wellbeing. You do not need to deal with it alone. Talking to someone you trust, whether a friend, family member, or professional, can make a significant difference. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or distressed, Samaritans provides free, confidential support around the clock on 116 123.

Ongoing Protection

After addressing the immediate harassment, take steps to reduce your vulnerability going forward:

  • Review your privacy settings on all platforms to limit who can contact you and view your content.
  • Consider using a username that does not reveal your real name on platforms where anonymity is appropriate.
  • Be cautious about sharing personal details such as your location, workplace, or daily routines.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on your accounts to prevent unauthorised access.

Responding to online harassment methodically, rather than emotionally, puts you in control. By documenting, reporting, and seeking support, you protect yourself and contribute to a safer online environment for everyone.
