Controlling Who Sees Your Posts
Why Post Visibility Matters
Every time you publish a post on social media, you are sharing information with an audience. The size and composition of that audience depends entirely on your privacy settings. If you have never adjusted your defaults, your posts may be visible to a far wider group than you realise. On KF.Social, you have granular control over who sees each post, and taking a few minutes to configure these settings can make a significant difference to your online privacy.
Audience Settings on KF.Social
KF.Social offers three primary audience options for every post you create:
- Everyone: Your post is visible to all KF.Social users, including people who are not on your friends list. This is the most open setting and is best reserved for content you are comfortable sharing publicly.
- Friends Only: Only people you have accepted as friends can see the post. This is the recommended default for most users, as it limits your audience to people you have chosen to connect with.
- Only Me: The post is visible only to you. This can be useful for saving drafts, storing personal notes, or hiding older posts you no longer want others to see.
You can select the audience each time you create a post by using the audience selector before publishing. You can also set a default audience in your account privacy settings so that every new post starts with your preferred visibility level.
Why Default Settings Matter
Most social media platforms set post visibility to a broad audience by default. Many users never change this, which means their content is accessible to people they may not know or trust. On KF.Social, we encourage you to review your default audience setting as soon as you create your account. Navigate to Settings > Privacy > Default Post Audience and choose the option that matches your comfort level. Setting your default to "Friends Only" is a practical starting point for most people.
Reviewing and Adjusting Old Posts
Even if you change your default settings today, posts you published in the past will retain whatever audience setting was active at the time. It is worth going through your older content to check whether any posts are more visible than you intended. On KF.Social, you can edit the audience of any past post by opening the post, clicking the audience icon, and selecting a new visibility level. Consider reviewing posts that contain personal details such as your location, workplace, family information, or photographs that could be used to identify you.
Think Before You Post
Privacy settings are only one part of the equation. Before publishing any content, ask yourself a few questions. Would you be comfortable if this post appeared in a search engine? Could this information be used by someone you do not know to learn more about you than you would like? If a post contains details about your daily routine, home, or travel plans, even a "Friends Only" audience may be too broad if your friends list includes people you do not know well.
The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) recommends regularly reviewing privacy settings on all platforms you use and being mindful of what personal data you share online. Get Safe Online also provides practical advice on managing your visibility across social networks.
Practical Steps to Take Now
- Open your KF.Social privacy settings and check your default post audience.
- Change the default to "Friends Only" if it is currently set to "Everyone."
- Scroll through your profile and review the audience on older posts, adjusting any that are more public than you intended.
- Before publishing new content, use the audience selector to choose the right visibility for that specific post.
- Periodically review your friends list to ensure you recognise and trust everyone on it.
Controlling who sees your posts is not a one-time task. As your social connections change and you share new content, revisiting these settings regularly will keep your privacy aligned with your intentions.
