Walk out of a hot yoga class and the evidence of effort is dripping off you. It feels like proof that something powerful happened, and studios lean hard into that feeling with claims about torched calories, sweated-out toxins, and dramatic new flexibility. Some of it holds up and some of it does not, and the difference matters because a soaked mat is a very convincing but very misleading measure of what you actually achieved. Here is what the research supports, claim by claim.
The short version
- Hot yoga does not burn meaningfully more calories than the same class at room temperature. One controlled study measured about 150 calories an hour in both.
- The sweat is water, not fat and not toxins. Any weight you lose in class comes straight back the moment you rehydrate.

The claims, and why they are sticky
Hot yoga is usually practised in a room heated to around 40 degrees Celsius, roughly 105 Fahrenheit, often with high humidity. The heat makes the whole experience more intense: you sweat buckets, your heart works harder to cool you, and you finish feeling thoroughly worked over. That intensity is real, but it is easy to misread. Feeling wrecked and being transformed are not the same thing, and most of the popular hot yoga claims confuse the two.
Let us take the three big ones in turn: that you burn far more calories, that the sweat is detoxing you or melting fat, and that the heat makes you dramatically more flexible.
Claim: you burn way more calories
The intuition is that a harder-feeling, sweatier class must burn far more energy. When researchers actually measured it, that did not hold up. In a controlled study that had people do the same yoga sequence in a hot room and at normal room temperature, calorie burn was essentially the same in both, around 150 calories across an hour of practice. In that study, average heart rate did not actually differ much between the hot and room-temperature conditions, and the heat did not raise the energy cost of the poses either.
More generally, when heat does push your heart rate up, that is your body working to cool itself, not a sign of extra calories going into the movement. That is why the sweaty, breathless feeling of hot yoga is a poor guide to energy burned. For context, 150 calories in an hour is a gentle amount, well below what a brisk walk or an easy jog delivers, hot room or not.
A hot room makes you work harder to shed warmth, diverting blood to your skin and leaving you flushed and breathless. Your brain reads that strain as hard work, so the class feels tougher and more productive than the calorie meter agrees with. The feeling is honest, the calorie story attached to it is not.
Claim: the sweat is detoxing you or melting fat
This is the claim that most deserves retiring. Sweat is overwhelmingly water plus a little salt. It is your body's cooling system, not a waste-disposal system. Your liver and kidneys handle the actual clearing of substances from your body, and sweating more does not help them do it. There is no meaningful detox happening on the mat, only cooling.
The weight you see drop on the scale straight after class is the same story. It is fluid you lost as sweat, and it returns as soon as you drink, which you should. Losing water weight is not losing fat, and rehydrating undoes it within hours. Chasing a lower post-class scale number by drinking less is not a shortcut to fat loss, it is just mild dehydration, and it works against you.
Sports medicine guidance treats fluid losses above 2 percent of body weight as the point where performance and wellbeing start to suffer. In a hot room you can hit that easily. The goal is to replace what you sweat, not to admire how much lighter dehydration made you look.
Claim: the heat makes you far more flexible
There is a grain of truth here, but only a grain. Warm muscles and connective tissue do stretch a little more easily in the moment, so you may reach a touch deeper in a hot room. But when researchers measured range of motion across many joints in heated versus room-temperature yoga, the heat produced only a small, isolated advantage rather than a dramatic across-the-board boost. Most of the flexibility you build comes from doing the poses regularly over weeks and months, not from the temperature on the day.
There is also a caution buried in that extra warm-room reach. Because heat lets you push further than usual, it is easier to stretch past what your joints are ready for and tweak something. The deeper range feels great in the moment and is not always earned. Treat the extra flexibility the heat gives you as borrowed, and do not force it.
The heat gives you a bit more reach today, but it has not made your tissues permanently longer. Ease into the deeper positions rather than lunging into them, because the warmth can mask the signals that would normally tell you to stop.
What actually holds up
None of this means hot yoga is pointless. Yoga itself is genuinely good for you, and hot yoga delivers those benefits along with an atmosphere plenty of people love. The key finding from the research is simply that the benefits come from the yoga, not the heat.
- Vascular health improves either way. In a trial that randomised middle-aged adults to Bikram yoga at 40.5 degrees Celsius, the same yoga at 23 degrees Celsius, or no yoga, blood vessel function improved in both yoga groups regardless of room temperature. The poses did the work, not the thermostat.
- Strength, balance, and stress relief are real yoga benefits that a hot class shares with any other yoga class.
- If the heat is what makes you show up, that counts for a lot. The best practice is the one you enjoy enough to keep doing, and some people genuinely love the hot-room experience.
- Body fat can edge down in consistent practitioners, but through regular practice and overall habits, not through sweating in a single class.
So choose hot yoga because you like it, not because you believe the heat is a magic multiplier. A room-temperature class gives you almost all the same benefits with far less strain on your body's cooling system.
Doing hot yoga safely
The heat is the one part of hot yoga that carries real added risk, so it is worth respecting. Exercising hard in a hot, humid room stresses your ability to regulate temperature and can tip into heat illness if you ignore the warning signs.
- Hydrate before and after. Arrive well hydrated and replace fluids afterwards. Drink to your thirst during class rather than either gulping constantly or toughing it out bone dry.
- Know the warning signs. Dizziness, nausea, headache, a racing heart that will not settle, confusion, or feeling faint are signals to stop. These are not badges of a hard class, they are your body asking you to cool down.
- Leave the room if you feel unwell. Step out, sit or lie down somewhere cool, and rehydrate. No pose is worth pushing through heat illness for.
- Check with a doctor if you are higher risk. If you are pregnant, have heart or blood-pressure conditions, or are prone to fainting, get medical advice before trying hot yoga. Room-temperature yoga is a safe alternative that keeps nearly all the benefits.
The poses in hot yoga are the same poses you could do in a cooler room. The heat is the only thing adding meaningful risk, and it adds almost no extra benefit in return. If in doubt, or if you ever feel genuinely unwell in the room, choose the cooler class. You lose next to nothing and you stay safe.
