There is a can that now sits, unremarkable, in corner shops next to the sweets and the fizzy drinks, at a child's eye level and a child's price. It contains a dose of caffeine that would give many adults the jitters, sold in bright colours with names built for excitement. A generation ago, handing a stimulant drink to a ten-year-old would have seemed strange. Today it barely registers. That shift did not happen by accident, and the health bodies that study children are unusually blunt about it: energy drinks are not appropriate for kids. This is a look at how the normal moved, and what the evidence actually says.

What an energy drink actually is
An energy drink is, at its core, a delivery system for caffeine, usually stacked with sugar and other stimulant-adjacent ingredients such as guarana (which is itself a caffeine source) and taurine. This matters because the word 'energy' does a lot of quiet work. It sounds like nutrition. What it means is stimulation. The lift you feel is a drug effect, not food powering a body.
The first thing to clear up is a confusion the drinks industry benefits from: energy drinks are not sports drinks, and the terms should not be used interchangeably. A sports drink carries water, sugar, and electrolytes to replace what heavy exercise burns off. An energy drink adds a stimulant load on top. Paediatric guidance treats them as different products with different risks, and is clear that even sports drinks are rarely needed by children, while energy drinks are simply not for them at all.

What caffeine does in a smaller body
Caffeine is a stimulant, and its effect scales with body size. The same dose that gives an adult a mild lift lands much harder in a lighter child. European food-safety scientists reviewed the evidence and proposed a cautious limit for children and adolescents of about 3 milligrams of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day for habitual intake. For a 30 kilogram child, that is roughly 90 milligrams, a threshold a single larger energy drink can equal or exceed on its own.
Above sensible amounts, caffeine in children is linked to anxiety, a racing heart, raised blood pressure, poor sleep, and jitteriness, and paediatric reviewers have flagged more serious concerns in children with underlying heart conditions, seizure disorders, or diabetes. The sugar load adds its own problems on top. And because caffeine disrupts sleep, a child who drinks one to feel less tired can end up more tired the next day, then reach for another. That loop is easy to start and hard to see.
Reviewers single out children with heart abnormalities, seizure disorders, or diabetes, and those taking certain medications, as most at risk from energy drinks. If your child has any ongoing health condition, talk to your doctor before caffeine of any kind, and treat energy drinks as off the table.
How the normal quietly moved
Nobody announced that children should drink stimulants. The shift happened through the ordinary machinery of selling things. Energy drinks were priced low enough for pocket money, placed on low shelves beside sweets, and wrapped in the imagery of gaming, sport, and staying up late, all of which speak directly to teenagers and younger kids. Sponsorship of sports, esports, and online personalities did the rest, attaching the brand to people children already admire.
Each step was small and deniable. A colour here, a sponsorship there, a price that undercuts water. But the cumulative effect was to move a product from 'unusual thing for a child to have' to 'thing you see in a school bag and barely notice'. That is what normalisation is: not one big decision, but a thousand small ones that shift where the line sits, until the line is somewhere no one would have chosen on purpose.
What to do as a parent
The good news is that the alternative is genuinely simple, and it is not about banning things in a way that makes them more appealing. It is about being clear on what a child's body actually needs, which is far less exotic than a can promises.
- Name the real needs. Thirst is fixed by water. Tiredness is fixed by sleep. A slump in the afternoon is usually a sign of too little of one or both, not a shortage of caffeine.
- Keep energy drinks out of the routine. Treat them the way you would treat any adult stimulant: not a children's product. You do not need a dramatic ban, just a steady, unremarkable 'these are not for you'.
- Watch the caffeine that sneaks in elsewhere. Cola, iced coffee drinks, and some 'energy' sweets add up. The 3 mg/kg limit is a total across the day, not a per-drink allowance.
- Talk about the marketing. Older kids respond well to being let in on the trick. Point out the sponsorship, the shelf placement, and the fact that 'energy' means a drug, not food. Understanding the sell is a durable defence.
For a child, water covers hydration and sleep covers energy. Neither of those needs a brightly coloured can, and no health body recommends one. If tiredness is persistent, that is worth a conversation with your doctor, not a stimulant.
This is one area where the guidance is refreshingly unambiguous. There is no meaningful expert body arguing that children benefit from energy drinks. The debate is only about how tightly to restrict sales, not about whether kids should be drinking them. When the evidence is this one-sided, the normal is worth resisting, precisely because it took so much effort to build.
