A front lever is one of the cleanest tests of pulling strength there is: you hang under a bar and hold your entire body straight and horizontal, facing the ceiling, with arms locked out. It looks impossible until you understand the trick behind training it. You do not attempt the full straight body and fail. You start tucked up small, where the hold is easy, then lengthen your body one controlled step at a time. Each step is harder because your body acts as a longer lever, and that ladder is the whole method.
The short version
- A front lever is trained by **changing your body length**, not by muscling the full position. Short is easy, long is hard.

What a front lever is, and the lever trick
Hang under a bar, then pull and brace until your body is straight and horizontal, facing up, arms locked. That is a front lever. It is held almost entirely by your lats, the big muscles of your back, working with a hard core brace to keep you rigid. Your arms stay straight the whole time, which is what makes it so demanding.
The reason you cannot just try it and succeed is physics. The further your bodyweight is spread out from the bar, the harder your back has to work to hold it level, because your body becomes a longer lever. Tuck up into a ball and the weight sits close to the bar, so the hold is light. Stretch out flat and the same bodyweight becomes far heavier to hold. So you train the front lever by controlling how long your body is.
You never train the full front lever until you are ready for it. You train the hardest length you can hold cleanly, then lengthen a little as you get stronger. The progression is a dial, not a leap.
The engine: a straight arm pull
The front lever is a straight arm skill. Your elbows stay locked, and the force comes from your shoulders pulling your arms down and back toward your hips using your lats. This is a movement most people have never trained, which is why the lever feels alien even to strong pull up athletes.
The best strength drill for it is the straight arm pull down, done with a band or cable. Keep your arms dead straight and pull the handle from overhead down to your thighs by driving your shoulders, not by bending your elbows. This trains the exact lat action the lever lives on.
Bending your arms to make a hold easier. The moment your elbows bend you turn the lever into something closer to a row and skip the strength you are trying to build. Keep your arms straight and drop to an easier tuck instead.
The progression ladder
Work through these positions in order. Hold each for time until it feels solid, then extend your body to the next. There is no rush, and skipping a step usually means bending your arms or arching your back to fake it.

Keep your body level at every step. It is tempting to let your hips sag or your back arch to make a hold feel possible, but that is a different, easier position that does not build toward the real thing. A flat, level line is the standard. A simple weekly plan
The front lever is a strength skill, so train it fresh, not fatigued. Two or three sessions a week, with rest between them, and short quality holds rather than long grinding ones.
- Straight arm pull downs. 3 to 4 sets of 8 to 12 reps with a band or cable, arms locked straight, driving from the lats. This is your strength engine.
- Tuck or advanced tuck holds. 4 to 5 holds at the hardest length you can keep level, aiming to build total time. Stop each hold when your form breaks, not after.
- Front lever raises. From a hang, pull your straight body up toward horizontal and lower under control, in whatever tuck you can manage. This builds the pull into and out of the position.
- Negatives. Start at the top of your hardest position and lower slowly toward a hang, staying as straight as you can. You are strongest when lowering, so you can control lengths you cannot yet hold.
- Core bracing. Hollow body holds on the floor teach the ribs-down, glutes-tight brace that keeps your lever rigid. A sagging middle leaks the position.
Add a little most weeks: a few more seconds, a slightly longer body position, a heavier band on your pull downs. That steady increase, called progressive overload, is what carries you up the ladder. Training the skill twice a week or more beats one exhausting session.

If you feel any sharp pain in the front of your shoulder or your elbows, stop and back off. Straight arm holds put real demand on those joints, so build the connective tissue gradually and never rush from one length to the next. Aching the day after is normal, sharp joint pain during a hold is not.
