A gentle post-session stretch, done regularly, keeps the range you have. Systematic reviews show that stretching a joint for a couple of weeks improves its range, mostly because your nervous system tolerates the longer position better.
The second honest reason is simple: it feels good and it winds you down. After warm muscles, your leg muscles are pliable and a slow stretch is a pleasant way to shift out of training mode. That is a fine reason on its own.
The big one people believe is that stretching after training stops the soreness that arrives a day or two later, called delayed onset muscle soreness. The whole routine is five to ten minutes. You do not earn extra by grinding for half an hour. Consistency across your training week does more for your range than one marathon stretching session.
