Prebiotics and probiotics sound almost identical, sit next to each other on the shelf, and get used interchangeably in marketing that mostly wants your money. But they are two genuinely different things, and knowing which is which changes what you buy and what you eat. Probiotics are live bacteria you swallow. What probiotics actually do
This is where honesty matters, because the supplement aisle promises far more than the evidence supports. Probiotics are not a general tonic that makes any healthy person healthier. There is also a labelling problem worth knowing about. A probiotic only works if enough live organisms actually survive the journey to your gut, and supplements vary a lot in quality, storage, and how many live bacteria remain by the time you swallow them. The number on the label is measured at manufacture, not at the end of the shelf life. The overall message is unglamorous but freeing.
